I'm currently running their 5w40 and have had success with other weights in the past. But i've recently heard that they are very secretive and are possibly not a "true" synthetic. Any info would be appreciated. I've also used M1 5w40 truck/suv until it was discontinuted and also M1 10w40 HM.

Send Royal Purple an email. They have always been very responsive whenever I have had questions. One of their representatives even responded to my questions several times one weekend when their offices were closed. Great company to deal with.

PAO. They use a GrpI carrier for the add pack. They make outstanding oils. That 5w40 is their only API SM approved oil and looks quite awesome.

When we are talking about Group IV/PAO, are we talking about the 5W-40. I was told last year by a Royal Purple rep that their 5W/10W-30 oils were Group III.

Both times I have contacted RP, they said PAO w/ GrpI additive carrier.

I am looking to learn something here. Why would one want to use Group IV PAO for the base oil and Group 1 for the additive pack carrier? Why not use Group IV for both?

This is probably not the right wording, but a 100% Group IV/PAO will not dissolve the additives that are blended in it. Need to clarify with bruce or Molakule.

I was told May of last year that all their emgine oils are Group IV and V and was told 4 years before that the same thing.

From what I understand additives need some dino as a carrier. I dont know if it is limited to GrpI, GrpII, GrpII+, GrpIII or what.

What I have read, POE synthetic (Group V) can function as a carrier oil. However the reason it isn't used that often is because POE oil is very expensive.

I have always been told Grp IV/PAO as well when I have asked. I seriously doubt they are using Grp III.

How did you like the M1 10W40 HM?

The 10w40 HM seemed to work pretty good for me. Unlike other M1 weights i've used that would come out like water when changed. That last time I changed using RP, it came out just as thick as it went in. I don't know if that's bad or good. At least it's not shearing down to 0w.

I'm also looking for a good all year round oil for an 04 Subaru STi.

Castrol Syntec 0W-30 (a.k.a., "German Castrol" or simply "GC") has performed well year-round in my 2005 STi (although I currently am trying Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30). All my UOA's are in the archives if you're interested.

You can't measure the viscosity loss of an oil by how the oil drains out.

Hi Dennis,

I just drained the PP out of my car today, and replaced with another batch of PP. I hope to send off the oil sample to Blackstone sometime this week. I'll be sure to post the UOA when I receive it. I'll be getting a TBN too.

Cheers,
-Andy
