Royal Purple solved my problem

The dipstick on my recently acquired '91 4Runner is one of those that is hard to read, because its color is too close to the color of new oil. I assume as the oil gets older and darkens, that won't be a problem; but I just changed the oil, and I wanted to get an accurate reading.

So I added about 1/2 a quart of Royal Purple 5w30, and now I can see the level clearly. That small amount didn't change the color of the oil drastically, but it darkened it just enough to see.

Take a red Sharpe and color the lines in up to the full mark.
The oil changes the color on the dipstick and it sticks out like crazy.

I wish I could do that on mine. Mine has 5 holes drilled into
the dipstick between ADD and FULL. No cross hatch pattern.

I just check the level after the car has sat overnight and all of the oil has returned to the sump.

This is what RP users talk about( i.e. the sensless, inane, infantile RP bashing )that gets us so ticked off that people say "doesn't" happen at BITOG.

It's just over $100 per 4 qt jug here in Australia. That's why I won't use it. Redline is worse btw, about $130 per 4 quarts. These are considered "boutique" brands here, and so up to double the price of other full synthetics.

Even though RP is a great oil, I still could not afford it, even if I were working again.

Regular price for RP at Pep Boys is $9.99 according to the website. Regular price for Castrol with FST is $9.99. Mobil 1 is $9.29. Valvoline Synpower is $9.19. So not a huge difference there.

Autozone shows RP for $9.79/qt. Mobil 1, $9.59. PP, $8.99. Castrol Edge with SPT, $8.99. Castrol Edge with FST, $9.59.

Right now, NAPA has some grades of RP for $6.99, right around the regular price of the "good" synthetics at Walmart.

Like most of you, I try to buy my oil on sale, or FAR or whatever. The RP I have I got at Pep Boys for $30.00 for 5 quarts with a filter. Hoping that sale comes back.

Anyway, while my post was somewhat tongue-in-cheek (although it did work), I didn't mean to start another RP war.

Nothing wrong with RP - I just don't know how it can compete with PP, PU, M1, and GC when they are all easy enough to find for $3.00-$5.00 per quart.

The problem I have with RP is they continually try to sue anyone who produces a lubricant that is even close to purple.

They lost my confidence a long time ago.

I don't know how long Liqui Moly has been using purple bottles for, but the company was founded in 1957. Royal Purple was founded in 1986.

The RP lawsuit against Liqui Moly is quite ridiculous.
Yes I've seen the Liqui Moly bottles in a lighter shade of Purple than what RP uses and not for one second did I make a connection to the American oil company RP.

I'm sure that the German oil company barely knows who RP is and certainly weren't thinking of then when they chose that colour for some of their bottles. Besides the target market, European vehicles, has a different focus to the primarily American made cars RP targets.
