RP is a grp IV PAO oil and if I could get it at a reasonable price I'd use nothing else due to the success I had with it.

I don't doubt RP is an Ok oil...

Oh sorry....had to yak that up...but why pay more for a product that really has no compelling evidence to justify the ridiculous price?

I don't get it?

Please show me some compelling evidence that will convince me that RP is worth 3-4 times the price of it's competitors.

I have already shown you it is NOT that much more expensive "everywhere" it is sold. Apparantly you can't or won't acknowledge that.

By the same token you also get the one(s) everyone gangs up on( that has ranged from Royal Purple to Valvoline to Mobil 1 in my time here ). There really are no bad oils out there with the exceptions of some really old stuff or some really cheap stuff like the Accel oil at Wal-Mart that is barely fit for a lawn mower.

Well said. There always seems to be a new flavor of the week and it's funny to watch posters gushing over it. Once the novelty wears off another "flavor" takes its place and the gushing starts all over again. I remember:

Havoline
Motorcraft
German Castrol (people actually went hunting for that one)
Pennzoil Platinum
The current flavor-Redline

I'm sure there have been others that I don't remember. It will be interesting to see what flavor is next and to watch posters rave about it. Maybe Royal Purple will someday be the weekly favorite-stranger things have happened here.

Actually, its not. RP is Group IV PAO base (mostly). The fact that PP is just a group III (not even XHVI "group III+" base stock like RTS) is one reason I don't use PP. Its still good oil and cheaper than a Grp IV, but I don't see the attraction of a group III when RTS XHVI (III+) is out there- assuming its suitable for your application. For other applications, PP doesn't seem enough better than PYB or VYB conventional oils to justify it to me.

As for RP- I use it in ONE application. I have a fairly big flat-tappet cam in a 440, and with its fairly tight clearances and HV oil pump, I find that RTS (only available in 5w40) kicks the high-RPM oil pressure higher than I like to see- I'm concerned about wear on the cam/oil pump helical gears and possible failure of the intermediate shaft. Most non-boutique synthetics are now SM rated, and while I actually think that is *fine* for flat cams, I'm cautious enough to prefer the added safety margin of an SL oil or an SM HDEO. The SM HDEO is ruled out due to the 5w40 rating; therefore, I picked SL rated RP 5w30 and it is working very well for me. Yes, I could use Redline or Amsoil, but RP is extremely readily available for me, and that's a benefit too.

I consider the above a fairly rational assessment- I'm not shilling for or against RP. Just using it where it works. Yes, they've made what I'd call bad advertising decisions (though nothing as bad as Castrol .... Jimmy!). Yes, its a goofy color. Yes there are cheaper options for many... but not all... applications. But its good oil and there are UOAs are on here to prove it.

NHHEMI, thanks for answering my questions. I am going to keep on using RL for now, Maybe in a couple of years after I trend the RL, I'll start using it just to create a trend and see how it works. I definitely don't have anything bad to say about their gear oils. So far they are working great in my rig.

LMAO, I predict the oil terry pushes ( RL1 ) will be the next flavor

i've only been here a short while and have already seen valvoline come full circle. this place is a bit inbred like that

The fact that opinions change doesn't make them worthless. It might even make them worth more. You have to look at WHY they change.

I have used their oil once and it worked just fine. I am a big fan of their gear lubes and their tranny fluids. My 07 Manual Mustang GT tranny has never shifted as smooth as it does on Synchromax.

Man there is a lot of poo poo in this thread.

Just use a good quality oil at the recommended weight and change it often and you will be fine.

If your asking if RP is a good oil, then yes. It is a good oil.

For me personally though, unless you can get it as cheap as the competition, the extra money for it is not justified unless you are a track addict or drive in a very harsh environment. But if you can get it cheap then go for it.

Oh, and I have used RP in the past in my old 280ZX Turbo and the UOA's were great.
