For use in a known sludger (2001 Toyota 2.2L) is there an appreciable difference between Shell Rotella-T 5W-40 and Mobil 1 T&SUV for maximum sludge resistance? (I'm currently using 5,000 mile OCI's with Mobil 1 5W-30 EP for sludge protection but was thinking of switching to one of the two mentioned above if there's any sludge resistance advantage)

The M1 Truck and SUV should do better. In addition to the high level of detergency, it also contains esters (group V oil) which is a natural cleaner.
The Saab 9-5 with the 4 cylinder engine is something of a known sludger as well. The T&SUV is a popular choice, Rotella is rarely mentioned. Probably Group 4 vs. Group 3 snobbery
FWIW I run the T&SUV in my 9-5, but use the cheaper Rotella in my motorcycle.

Truck & SUV and Delo seem to get a lot of attention here, for good reason, and there is just less focus on Rotella "synth," though I don't know why. I'm sure they're all very good, but having looked at lots of stellar UOAs I'd personally pick the Delo or T&SUV, in that order. Obviously if you're looking for a 5W- oil that rules out the Delo.

Well I bought a load of the Castrol Tection 15w40 on sale at Advance auto for summer sluge prevetion.Toyota '99 v6 sludger.
Use of Auto Rx ,stout oils and short oci's are my defense against sluge.The car is now used by daughter for short trips so I'm going 2500 or less on the winter 5w30.
I'd rather use cheaper oil and change more frequently.

T&SUV costs $1.90/qt more than Rotella T Synthetic...not worth it to me IMHO. M1 EP is fine...why not just stick with it? Perhaps switch to 10w-30?
I guess you could switch to Rotella 5w-40 for a reduction in costs but you'll probably take a hit in fuel efficiency. IIRC, Terry mentioned a while back that a thick oil may not necessairly be best for this engine as the oil must flow rapidly to displace heat.

T&SUV costs $0.60 (or about) by the gallon of RTS ($14.88) vs. T&SUV 5 quart jug($20.50)
They don't offer RTS in quarts at my WM ..but T&SUV is (I think) $5.28/quart.

I was just gonna ask this question myself as the stores in my area have an almost non exsistent supply of T&S Mobil. The shelves are always clear. For some reason my father-in-law doesn't understand that the GC he uses in his truck is ok.(the 0w scares him for some reason, he thinks it's too thin) I'm not gonna argue, it's his truck.
So for a 'Yota 2.7l 4x4 Tacoma with 105k on the clock now(switched to GC a little before that) I think it's high time he started taking care of it in a proper way. He makes a alot of short trips so I think 5k OCI's are his max for now. Once I get the Blackstone report back I'll know for sure. I am keep in the Accent on GC though...it's seems to be hard on oil.

Rotella 5W-40 is great. Its a fairly priced group III oil that will perform wonderfully.
For maximum sludge protection does anyone think there's a significant difference among Rotella T, Mobil 1 TSUV, and Mobil 1 EP with 5,000 mile OCI's? (How about 3,000 mile OCI's with cheap dino which is what I used to do on this car?)
I have had excellent UOAs with Rotella T Syn. From what I have read it has the best group III technology out there.
You need low volatility to keep sludge down. Mobil 1's group IV base should provide that in any grade. The sludging might be as much a function of the PCV system. I heard Toyota increased flow in later years. Make sure yours is not plugged up.

The stuff was a bargain @ $12.88 ..it still edged T&SUV @ 13.43 ..but doesn't cut it @ 14.xx (the current price) when compared to T&SUV @ $4.10/quart when bought in the 5quart jug (admittedly absent from the shelf

Go with the M1. The Shell is good too, but the M1 is better.
