I got bored with the same old and poured Rotella T6 5W40 in to my Astro. Pure One oil filter.

Van has 200K+ miles on it and I thought at this stage it may not hurt to use
slightly thicker oil? Oil pressure was a bit low at warm idle with the recommended 5W30 I have been using. I have used Castrol GTX High Mileage for the last couple of years.

Van is mainly on severe duty - either short distances where oil never really warms up, or on longer stretches pulling a 4,000 lbs trailer.

Did I do the right thing, or could I cause damage with the thicker HD oil?

My buick 3800 (a cousin to your Astro's 4.3) got GREATLY improved oil pressure after getting all cleaned up running SSO, and its life was spent on short trips, hot days, and dino, up until I got it and eventually switched to syn.

Based on the type of service, I would suggest you run some PP and/or MMO and see what muck comes out the drain hole.

Just updating this tread. I did a 5K oci with the T6 and I have to say I really like it - very smooth and oil pressure was improved.

I would have liked to continue, but to my disgust the 2 WalMart's that I frequent now only sell it by the quart which makes it way too expensive.

For the time being I switched to Valvoline MaxLife 5w30 with 1 quart of 10w40. Seems I am still achieving the improved oil pressure (vs. the 5w30 Castrol I used in the past). Not sure if I am hurting anything with my rather uneducated experiments?

I will still switch back to T6 if I can find it i gallon quantity.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, i would like to ask the T6, is it designed for trucks, heavy duty car or it's fine for regular gasoline car? The local Walmart here has Rotella on discount...
Sorry being a noob.

Completely fine to run in your car...it has a gas and diesel seal.

I wish they sold it in 5 quart jugs. I hate buying that extra quart. Though I suppose one could buy two gallon jugs, but then it would be a bit of a pain to get the oil level just right. Truly an all around awesome oil though.

I typically buy multiple gallon jugs. It's not that big a deal to get the level right, and it works great for oil changes in mine and Mom's Jeeps. Buy 3 gallons, change both, and have just under a quart left over.

In BC, I think it stays warm enough that you could most likely run a 15w40 HDEO year-roud w/o issue.

IF you're not comfortable with that, I'd go with a 10w30 HDEO...probably will give the same results.
