Rotella question

I notice Rotella 10-30 everywhere. Its rated "CJ-4, CI-4 Plus, CI-4, CH-4, CF, SM, SL, SJ, SH".

How commonly is this used in gas passenger cars? All the buyers I see are buying it for diesels, presumably. Yet it clearly says "SM, SL, SJ, SH", too.

I admit I am uninformed about the advantages/disadvantages of Rotella in passenger cars. Can anyone elaborate? Thanks.

Strong detergent additive packages in Conventional Rotella and Synthetic Blend Rotella T5 help keep an engine clean. These oils are very Robust and whatever the oil filter cant' catch, these oils will hold in suspension. Shell makes some very good oils from their conventional white bottle pcmo to the top T6.

If you vehicle, per owners manual, can run conventional 10w30 then Rotella T conventional could be a very good choice for the heat of summer.

Rotella t5 10w30 is a syn blend and dual rated SM CF
Which makes me wonder why mobil 1 hi mi is rated SL which is even older than SM. I wonder why Mobil 1 High Mileage didn't get a SM rating.

Currently using it in my parents 89' Suburban with the TBI 350.
No issues.

Dual rated engine oils are primarily designed for fleets who don't want to carry a gasoline oil and a diesel oil- so one oil can do both. Up until now common diesel grades get a free pass on certain gasoline specs (ie Phos Max levels) which allows them to meet both specs. That is going to change though because PC-11 and GF-6 will no longer allow the free pass and there will be many more cross-over in grades as 10W30's and 5W30's start hitting the diesel market in big ways.

Thank you all for the replies. I see no reason NOT to use Rotella in my gas cars & trucks, then. At the ultra low price point ($13), it seems like a great product to buy.

Anyone know why its so cheap?

I don't see it as "cheap", although it's not really expensive, contrasted to many syns.

OTOH, what's wrong with using a typical decent quality PCMO in your gasser cars and trucks?

I just put Rotella T5 10w30 in my car the other day. It is API SM rated and my car is specd so that I can run it. $16 for 4 qts is really a good price for it

but I had to buy a quart too. So $21 bucks total. Still cool.
Gas mileage might be down 0.5 mpg.. Still very very early.
