I’m thinking of stocking up on these filters from RockAuto. $1.65 is an unbelievable deal for an oil filter. Figure the more i buy the more i’ll save on shipping. These would be for my 3 Pontiac Vibes with religious 5k OCI’s. Are Pro-Tec any good? Which would yall pick from their listed filters?

Get the $1.91 Various Mfr, they're made by Premium Guard, hence the PG in the name. They'll likely be Carquest Reds even though the picture is "Pronto." I'm running these on all my Toyotas.

RA has filters for near a buck sometimes as well, take a look occasionally especially if you're buying something else.

I picked up some of those super cheap “VARIOUS MFR” in a 2500. They are Prontos and look good. Added very little to shipping when ordering a bunch of other PG filters. I’m guessing they are all at the same warehouse, so that sweetens the deal for sure.

let me just add in my usual cautionary tale... of course this is just my 2 cents, and YMMV, etc ...

many Moons ago, I was attempting to partake in a similar deal for the vibe my buddy had at a time. ( this is around 2011-2012?)

I wanted wix-made filters, and they had some at that kind of price point., the ones I was looking at they had like 6 available, so I ordered them all.
when they arrived, something just felt...off... they were private label filters for "Big A Auto parts"
as some one here pointed out, they went out of business in 98 .

I emailed Wix at the time, with the date codes on said filters, after a bit of back and forth, as they had changed date code formats, they confirmed that the filters were at least 10-15 years old, and their recommended shelf life is only around 5 years if stored under ideal conditions, and they should not be used.
I didn't end up using them.

update: I found the original thread! unfortunately the pics are no longer there, or here..
it was 2014. I had a few other details off, but this was 12 years ago.

I am running the "varios manufacture" Premium on my Toyota and they all have been either the Pronto or Parts Plus equivalent to the Premium Guard XL / carquest Premium, etc. Worth the $5.

If you must be under $2 then I would try the "varios Manufacture" econo version which is likely the PG standard equivalent.

The Pro-Tec used to be an OK jobber filter but I would not trust anything M&H / Wix anymore.
