Rivian Recalling Almost All Vehicles

Rivian has announced a recall of almost all of their vehicles due to an issue with a bolt in the steering mechanism not being torqued properly.
I guess there is a leaning curve for manufacturers who have not previously made a vehicle

They probably “stole” bunch of engineers from other companies. But as Hyundai realized, just bcs. you got two engineers from BMW M division, doesn’t mean you got yourself BMW product.
These companies bet on trend. My friend who is all on Tesla, wants Rivian, even if wheels are falling off.

Learning curve?

Along the same lines of a 7 year old learning basic mechanics.

I mean I've never used a portable boat toilet, but I think I could keep the 'stuff' in the bowl.

Ain't subscribing to read one article, but if one bolt out of thousands that go into a car wasn't tightened enough that the tilt steering wheel won't stay in position, I'd say that's pretty good for any car maker, letalone a new one.

The engineers can certainly engineer but can the build a simple efficient reliable long enough lasting car? I mostly wish that the engineers the designed my vehicles get a uncurbable V. D. from their significant other.

I know a few people who work at the Bloomington plant in Illinois. Most of them are currently looking for other jobs as none of them believe that Rivian will be around much longer than a year or so. The plant is operational nightmare from their stories and the way Rivian is losing money its only a matter of time at this point.

Well, ya never know. In early 2018, Tesla was nearly kaput because the Fremont plant mfg lines kept stopping due to robots breaking down. Musk was nearly broke. In a Hail Mary effort, they erected to huge tents and built the cars manually. Now they are by far the most valuable car company in the world. Warts and all...

I wish Rivian, Ford, GM and the rest good luck in their EV endeavours.

I think the power hand wrenches they use here cost a few thousand bucks each and are either calibrated regularly or are self calibrating at that price.

Is this the first ever recall of an automobile or it is something else?

Im starting to think this the down and out news about this company might make it a good buy, down 10% today alone. Though I learned a long time ago not to fight the market, this one is bouncing along at an all time low and maybe building a nice base, yet still, the onslaught of EV competition is only in its fist baby steps.

If one of their vehicles was mine I'd likely find out the torque spec and just do it myself as it can't be THAT involved. Yes it's easy to simply take it to a dealer, but still...

I wonder if Rivian utilizes auditing companies who review and rate their manufacturing processes ? We uses to spend a fortune each year on ISO certifications and TS certifications at the different plant sites. All of the tools used were checked for calibration as well. Maybe Rivian is self reviewing their manufacturing and production methods ?

I do know one thing, if Rivian doesn't figure out a way to reduce costs and increase profits they aren't going to survive. Certainly there will be a market for EV's that sell for more than $100K but if they are making less than 5% margin they will soon be in dire straits.

These problems occur with all automakers, all manufacturers actually, especially those that are new, small or 'boutique'. Try owning a Lotus...and thy have been around since the 60's. Rivian appears to be handling this well, certainly do not appear to be dragging their feet although I expect capacity will be a problem in rolling out the fix.

I actually like the Rivian SUV, could see this being the next DD..I hope they succeed, but I expect they will grow to a certain point and be acquired.
