Riveted PCV Valve Bracket

My Impala with the 3.4L has a slight oil consumption problem that I'm trying to cure. It's not much, maybe only a half quart every 1k miles, but in a 4 quart sump, any unsolved consumption has my attention. I have switched to T6 5w30, hoping that a little thicker oil might help. So far, it seems to have helped a bit, but I wanted to go ahead and replace the PCV valve as well. However, the PCV valve has this riveted bracket on there that I've never seen before. I'm not sure how to remove it and I've heard conflicting reports as to how far the rivets go. Some people say it goes all the way through the VC, others say it doesn't. Any ideas on how to get this out, or would it just be best to remove the VC?
 
I'd say remove the valve cover. If you drill them or grind off the tails and they fall into the valve cover you'll be pulling it anyway.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. I still don't understand why the bracket is on there. This is the one and only year they put the bracket on. Stupid.

I was thinking the same thing , but before you do , find out what the replacement PCV Valve looks like .

But , I might try cutting the bracket with a Dremel tool . At the top & bottom of the " circle " the PCV valve resides in . Bend the 2 halves of the bracket back enough to remove the old PCV valve & then install the new one . Bend the 2 halves back to the original position .
 
That's not a bad idea. I'd need to spring for a Dremel, but I should have one anyways. Now I have an excuse to give to my wife.

If you dont actually need the bracket moving forward, and the VC is a PITA to remove, you could split the bracket at the riser on each side of the PCV and leave the rivets intact.

I'm not sure how difficult the VC removal is here but if it's anything like the 1MZ-FE rear VC gasket I did recently, you have to take half the upper works apart to get the VC off.

It's not as bad as the rear, but it's still somewhat inconvenient. I may opt for just cutting it, but we will see. I'm trying to justify spending ~$100 dollars for a new wireless Dremel as opposed to spending 15 bucks at the junkyard and a couple hours of my time and just swapping out the VC with one without the bracket.

If you decide to dremel it, post pics please. I have the same rivets on my 2006 Torrent.

I definitely vote junkyard if the VC job is easy.
Partly because I'm frugal but mostly because of the people that you meet.

I just did this on my wife's 3.4 last week. Get a real skinny screwdriver and put it under the bracket. Pry up on the bracket and the rivet pops up. Then grab the rivet with pliers and pull. It comes off pretty easy. The rivets do not go all the way thru. You could reuse the rivets, but I just used a couple short screws from my extra screw can.

Easy Peasy!

Not bad! Did you tap the rivet holes first or just screw it in?
 
Every PCV valve I ever changed fit into a groove in the grommet. Does this thing have such powerful crankcase pressure that it needs a bracket to hold the valve in, or is it just a way to thwart the do-it-yourselfer?

I read somewhere that it is a California Emissions Act thing, but I don't have a clue why.
