Rislone vs moly

I do not normally use additives, but my mom's 96 explorer has that old 4.0 ohv with the dreaded valve tick... and it has over 175k... I just want it to last as long as it can. She's gonna drive it til it drops, and I've heard that zinc additives help. Any thoughts on Rislone vs. Moly ?
 
First off, it's lifter noise. Second, upper valve train noise does not necessarily mean a problem exists. Third, hydraulic lifters are by nature “noisy”.

You probably do have worn lifters at this mileage, but more importantly, worn rocker arms - thus increasing clearance. Continue to use what is recommended and it will run for a long time as it is. I would suggest a 5w30.
 
I think i would lean toward the moly.Rislone is more of a cleaner, i'm not sure if there is zddp in rislone or not. I have used lubromoly mos2. Shaffers oil sells a moly additive- shaffers #132.

Different types of additives, one is a cleaner the other an anti wear.

For the tick there are many products that may help, I never used Rislone so i cant comment on it but there is also MMO, Kreen, Chemtool, all have good track record with this sort of problem.

Once the tick is gone then go with the MoS2.
Try the Rislone by all means and let us know if it helped.

I am a believer in MMO in that it slowly cleans sludge without harming the additive pack all too much, and also because it lowers the viscosity... but since the ol' explorer has over 175k I really would rather not thin down the viscosity, and besides that, I just have a hunch (go ahead, make some noise about that, haha) that Rislone or Moly would take away that ticking better than MMO. I think I'll try Rislone, since it's cheaper and since you want to know the effect, Trav. Thanks everyone for the input...

BTW to those who did want to know how Rislone [will] work[ed], you'll be waiting a while because I ain't changing the oil in that thing 'til much later in the spring. It's too cold, and she (my mom) is currently driving a different vehicle anyways.

P.S. To Trav - What do you mean by "Different types of additives, one is a cleaner the other an anti wear." --- I thought that they both were friction modifiers?

First off the solvents in the mmo will flash off pretty quickly so the sump load of oil won't be thinned out for long.
Moly or mos2 is a friction modifier,rislone may contain some zddp,it used to anyways.
I've used rislone. Its a solvent carrier for sure,so like mmo its gonna clean until the solvents flash off.
Mos2 is a totally different animal. It layers itself on the moving metal parts and the pressure of this movement works the mos2 into the metals inconsistencies.
Then once the layers are applied the mos2 coated parts stop the actual metals from touching,decreasing wear. Mos2 is also slick which decreases drag or parasitic loss.

I'd do the flush clean out first then add mos2/moly.

Darn it... Here I already bought the Rislone... Oh well, maybe next time I'll get the mos2/moly. Anyway, when you say flush, what exactly are you implying? When I think flush, I think Seafoam (which I do have a can in the garage). I don't see MMO as a flush because it can be driven for the full OCI. And, FWIW, my friend's dad (yah, I know, hearsay bla bla, lol) who is a mechanic says that Rislone is not a flush, that it works well in vehicles that needed more zinc, which new oils don't have. Nonetheless, I'd try anything to keep that old explorer alive.

For a 1996 Ford Explorer 4.0 OHV v6 with over 175k to still be running without any major problems (even after having towed a full 40+ bales on a hayrack, totally exceeding the towing capacity), this baby still runs great and normally gets about 24 to 25 mpg highway and does not leak or burn any oil! AND, we only have [censored] Casey's gas where we live. I know that putting that crud gas into your car is like someone who smokes only a few cigs a day... It's not gonna give'em caner anytime soon, but it's shortened their lifespan by a an amount that's nothing to sneeze at. I wish we had a BP, Shell, Chevron, or Phllips 66 in town... I do put MMO in her tank every now and again, but that Casey's gas surely will shorten the lifespan of our cars but I hope the MMO helps a lttile... Even the guys at my local Oreilly's say Casey's gas sucks. Oh well, lol. Also, we try to run BP gas when we are outta town. I'd bet that if we had one of them top tier stations in town, we could get another one or two more mpg's out of our cars.

P.S in another thread I had asked about Peak vs Mag1, but (because I am kind of impulsive and indecisive at the same time) I just went ahead and bought Valvoline Next Gen semi-syn 5w30 for the explorer, since the 5 quart jug was only 17 bucks at Walmart, which to me is a pretty good deal for semi-syn, especially for a good brand name like Valvoline.

I doubt any additive is going to help. The 4.0 OHV is notorious for poor lubrication of the rocker arms and push rod tips. Once they are noisy, replacing the worn part is really the only cure. I would also check your oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, the dash gauge is a glorified idiot light, if it is on the low side, change your cam too. The cam bearing clearance dictates how much oil goes to the heads. As these engines wear, oil flow to the head seems to get reduced. While the 4.0 is not nearly as problematic as the 2.9, it still has some of the inherit design flaws. Or just leave it. I doubt anything will fail soon. The rocker arm pedestals are pretty durable on the 4.0, so I guess I would just drive it until the vehicle falls apart.
 
Many, many years ago I used Wynn's Engine tune-up in a bottle to quiet noisy lifters. It would work within seconds of pouring into the engine. It would last about 1-2000 miles. Not sure if they still make it but it worked. I am also sure there are other mystery oils that have replaced it and probably work too.

This is true and often overlooked, the few used oil analysis we have with MMO in the sump show far less thinning than one would expect from the VOA viscosity.
