Hello all! First off, I'm a new member here on BITOG, but I've been reading through random forums for probably over a year now. I value the information posted by many users, and have learned quite alot about oil here. I am a college student currently, and have been changing oil in my vehicle and my parents' vehicles since I was probably 14. My vehicle is a 2001 Ford F-150 with a 5.4L Triton V8 (hence my display name). My parents have quite a few vehicles, but to save time I'll just jump to the question:

My mother's 1996 Ford Explorer will be due for a change here before spring, and I was shopping in my local Dollar General a few days ago and happened to notice they have Peak Oil on the shelves for only $3.60 a quart. Normally I'd just go to Walmart and buy a 5.1 quart jug of Pennzoil (and grab a MC filter, too), but since the price of the Peak and the Pennzoil conventional come out to be nearly the same, I thought I might just give the Peak a chance and see if it does alright. The explorer has the old OHV 4.0, and just over 175k.

Anyone have any input on Peak vs Pennzoil?
 
I used Peak oil once and have no regrets for a conventional oil. It was something Autozone had and no longer carry. Peak meets all the current certifications on the SAE doughnut.
 
Peak was on BOGO sale about a month ago at Dollar General, peak is a good oil, most here will tell to use Pennzoil over Peak.
 
Peak is made by Warren,who also makes Wal Marts "Super Tech",so I would imagine they are pretty equal.
 
Seems to be on the thin side of the 30 weight scale. Lots of reports on here of it quieting an engine.

I used it in my friend's Tundra, and she actually reported that to me.

I have read a bit about Peak oil. Seems pretty decent from what I understand. If both are the same price and available, I would stick with the Pennzoil. It has much more moly (quieting agent) than Peak. Now if Peak was on sale and much cheaper I wouldn't hesitate to try.

Try both and let your ears tell you what works best. Maybe even do a used oil analysis.

I'd use it if it were on sale for a dollar or two a quart. But for the same price as Pennzoil Conventional and other top-tier conventionals I don't know why you'd bother. Stick with Pennzoil.
 
Thanks for the link R80RS, and the welcome, too. Looks like Peak has some good numbers.

laserred96gt - Yah, I can see why Pennzoil would be recommended more often than not over Peak. Pennzoil has a pretty good rep here, which I'm glad to see, since I've been using it for a while.

Warren seems to be on a large number of bottles on Walmart's shelf.

So Peak is on the thin side, eh? Usually I run 5w30 in it, but maybe I'd ought to get 10w-40 if I go with Peak, seeing as the explorer has over 175k miles on it... Or should I just stick with 5w30? (FWIW I know the whole bit on 90% of damage is at the startup and that 5w-xx flows easier cold than 10w-xx, but I'm not worried about that. I'm just wandering if it would benefit from a 40 weight since it's a high mileage vehicle)

P.S. cheesepuffs- "top-tier conventionals"?? There's top tier gasoline, I know that, but please, inform me on what you consider to be top-tier conventional oil.

I use Peak 10W30 in my truck and Peak 5W20 in my wife's Honda. Both run very quiet and smooth. PQIA rates Peak as a good oil, as others have said there are some good oil analyses here on Peak. I bought 40 quarts of Peak at the BOGO sale at Dollar General so we are set for a pretty good while.
 
I have 24 quarts of Peak 10w40 left. I have used the 5w30 and 10w30. It is a quality oil. Runs great in everything I have put it in.
 
When you are at DG, whatever you do, DON'T buy the DG Auto SAE 30 nor the DG Auto 10W-40.

The 10W-40 is only good for engines up to 1988, and the SAE 30 shouldn't be used in any car made after 1930!!!

The word "tier" wasn't invented by gasoline companies... Top tier anything means top level, top shelf, cream of the crop. A top conventional oil to me would be any major name brand or other oil that has proven to use quality base oils compounded with a strong add pack that surpasses the bare minimum API specs. Peak has a reputation on this forum for being "adequate" but why settle for the minimum when you can get a top shelf conventional from a major brand for the same amount of money?
 
Hi Triton and welcome,

You should also check out tenderloin's recent posts about what is on sale at the local parts stores. He puts them up the day they come out and is really on the spot with his info. His info will guide you as to what is on sale and usually has a filter included in the deal. He posted a couple either yesterday or today. Check them out before buying the Peak. Don't get me wrong, Peak is a good product but you may be able to get 5 quarts and a filter for less money. Good hunting
 
Peak is good oil but you can find it cheaper. DG just ran it on BOGO (smokin' deal) and O'Reillys had a jug with filter for $13.99.

But if you don't want to be bothered with that and DG is more convenient certainly nothing wrong with the Peak.
 
Oh I see what you mean - and I hope you didn't take me as being cynical, I really was just being curious. The thing is though, "Top Tier Gasoline" is legitimately an actual list of gas companies that not just meet but overly exceed the minimum standards:

So, would you say that top tier oil is more of a subjective view? Or is there an actual [legit] list of said oils?

As for Peak being the same thing as Super Tech... I would not say that I don't believe it, as it looks entirely possible, but whose to say Peak doesn't take Super Tech oil and add just a little more additive to it? Or that they really are not the same (like the old Pennzoil vs Quaker State)? Maybe they are the same, but without proof I'm not going to just buy Super Tech instead.

Oh gosh, I would never think about using DG brand oil! Might as well fill the crankcase with KY jelly hahaha. But your plain wrong about 10w-40. The gap will increase due to wear (due to high mileage), making 10w-40 totally viable as a choice, mind you I'd prefer 5w-40. But I don't want this thread to argue on oil weights, I've read plenty of those all around BITOG. I just wanted to talk about Peak oil.

If I have time I can take a look at Oreillys, but DG is more convenient for me (as is shopping on Amazon lol).

No cynicism here. And yes, I've known what top-tier gasoline is for years now. No confusion there. I was saying "top-tier" in reference to oils simply as a subjective description. Don't look too deeply into my wording. If I had said "top quality" or "top choice" oils it would have meant the exact same thing. There is no actual, legit list of "Top-Tier Motor Oil" like there is for gasoline. Just the API rating systems, the GF-5 rating, and the manufacturer standards like VW 502 and GM Dexos.

By the way I see we both own Chevy 305s running Pennzoil Conventional and an ACDelco filter. Nice.

Who said anything about 10W-40 being a bad weight?!?! 10W-40 is great for certain applications...

Pick up a bottle of DG Auto 10W-40 and note the API classification… it's rated SF, an obsolete standard. The bottle even says not for use in vehicles newer than 1988.

DG Auto SAE 30 has a classification of an SA oil!!!
