Rising cost of PP... it's time for me to move on.

Now that PP is up to $22 at WM and times being so tough I have decided that I am better off buying the cheapest name brand conventional oil. I currently run PP for 5-6k miles in the Jeep Liberty and approx 7k miles in the Neon. The Jeep sees alot of stop and go and fewer miles per year, while the Neon sees mainly back road cruising (hwy miles).

I've already got two oil changes worth of Maxlife for the Neon, but nothing in store for the Liberty.

What do you guys like for conventional oil and how long should I run it?

BTW, the Jeep only has 25k miles and has seen nothing but PP. The Neon has approx 70k miles and has seen a variety of oils, but only PP for the past two years.

Thanks in advance....

Yeah, Pennzoil Yellow Bottle is hard to beat, and if you are already a Pennzoil 'fan', you won't feel 'as bad' making the switch.

You could even keep your 5-6k mile OCI, and still get the same great protection....

Has the price really gone up that much?

I still see it priced far lower then oils that by all accounts, it is superior to.

Top brand name Conventional's are fine if you buy them in 5 qt jugs at China-Mart. Pennz, QS are $12 for the moment, probably going up. As Cramer says Buy, Buy, Buy. They also had Valvoline White Bottle for $11 for 5 qts. If the economy continues to go down the dumper, FAR's could make a comeback. Saw today that gasoline sales last week were down 10% compared to a year ago the same period.

I mean really, oil goes up a few bucks and you have to move on because of it? It's $22! Cheap maintenance you do every few months. NOTHING compared to what you spend in gas. I can see if prices went up $15 or $20, but $3? Really?

But if you are that desperate to cut back, just use YB Pennzoil.

PP is $23/jug at Wally in Little Rock.

While your brooding on this - you should brood on what your "cheap conventional" might cost later this year and next year. Wally (today) has YB at $12/jug - Pennz probably directed that to (temporarily) soften the blow of raising PP price.

IMO we have a very good chance of inflation taking off (and soon) - perhaps at a blood letting level. My humble advice - go to Wally today and buy 3-4 years worth of your favorite brew. This might get you laughed at in a year, but there's a good chance you'll be the one laughing.

My prediction - Wally YB jug at $20 this time next year (and rising fast).

All of the PP that I have bought has been either free after rebate or BOGO. All the good promos are gone....

I think I might just take your advice and go ahead and buy a little stash of YB.

Well, xBa, I think that PP was used in lieu of conventional due to the price. Now that it's stretching out a bit, it no long has the unique appeal in the OP's eyes. I too wanted to enhance the shrine (when am I going to get to use it? I'm dusting off unused GC green) with the stuff at the prevailing price. The same thing happened when Katrina ended the party with M1 T&SUV 5w-40. Delvac 1 for a $0.60/quart than RTS was a bargain. At $30/gallon (the 5w-40 disappearing until T&TD came back @ higher prices), it automatically subsidized RTS as a synthetic HDEO since it was slightly higher than half the cost. It wasn't DI ..but it didn't have to be given the price. You could dump it almost twice as often and still make out.

Same thing here. "Oh, you mean I can use a synthetic for just a little bit more? Sure."

What you're going to see is "true values" start to show themselves. While Pablo and I have taken it on the chin for Amsoil's price increases, it's only because they're much closer from "book to bill" cycling due to the smaller size. Go price a piece of good oak or maple. It's even more expensive than ever. That's how much more out of reach it will get. Now particle board is going up to and you finally figure out that you're the one that's sinking.

BTW - that "stock pile" to hedge inflation (assuming it goes hyper) starts making even more sense if you're maintaining several vechicles. I have three vehicles, plus I chg my moms oil (at my cost). So if inflation really kicks, the stockpiling method can add up to significant $$ savings.

I've always stock piled oil, filters, wiper blades, and other car related goodies. As ericthepig mentioned when you're maintaining a small fleet it adds up. To think that even if oil does drop more, that the prices of motor oil etc are going to come down, not likely. Stock piling motor oil and filters might just be a good investment!

Stopped at Advance Auto last night to pick up a quart of PP (My Son-in-law used one of mine and I was short a quart for an oil change) and I was shocked to see that PP is now selling for more than Mobil-1. 6.99/qt for M-1 and 7.39/qt for Pennz Platinum. I left without it and will pick up some at Wal-Mart. One of the reasons for going with PP over M-1 was that I was getting an excellent oil at a better price. If PP stays as high or higher than M-1 I may go to the Mobil product.

Geopolitically speaking - oil price is currently depressed in the face of possible recession (and thus less demand). But inflation in and of itself can ultimately counter that. Plus, Putin, Chaves, and Iran desparately need (esp. Putin) that price cranked as high as possible. Putin can create instability somewhere, and the next day he's pulling down more millions. I'm not counting on him not doing this.

My issue is, to make YB worth it, then I need it to do 7-8k OCIs with confidence. If that's an issue, I might as well drop $26 on an M1 jug (which I'll confidently take to 10-12k). M1 is nice because I can just chg it at the beginning of each school year (simple).

(I stockpiled my 3-4 yrs worth of YB the other nite. But I'm brooding on taking this back and exchanging for 4 yrs of M1 jugs)

Yeah, I can't see the prices going up much if any more for a bit if the economy keeps tanking. My Wal-Mart also has the $23 PP. But gas here has dropped $.40 since Sept 15. Heck, in New Orleans, there's a gas war and it's well below $3 a gallon.

It's getting a lot cheaper than it has been.

Oh, and remember a couple weeks back how excited we were that Wal-Mart had "rolled back" the price of PP????
