RIP My Honda Civic EX (Wrecked)

Artem,

Sorry that I got this off track with the hand position thing. The airbag going off while she was honking during impact probably focused a lot of energy on her wrist. You are right, she should have been panic braking and trying to avoid. I recently had someone run a red, actually two vehicles. I braked and laid into the horn and still managed to avoid them, but I was just starting from a stop. It was not an overly demanding stop, but it probably looked like one with suspension rocking front to back.

Astro,
FWIW, they taught me to keep my thumbs resting on the steering wheel, not hooking it to avoid thumb damage. That and not driving with one hand at 12, unless I wanted to smack myself in the face. I try to be good, but have always wondered if that was an old wives tale.

Artem, you paid for them but the bank had a lien, meaning that they paid for them? Sounds complicated.

For that, I would be grateful.

And I'll try to keep my hands at the 10 and 2 as the designers intended...

Glad your sister is okay.
The discussion about the hands position was interesting. Another lesson learned, do not over use the horn.

However, the facts of the accident are what they are.
The driver of the pickup violated the intersection and hit the Civic, causing injuries to the driver of the Civic.
No violaton of the intersection by the driver of the truck, no accident.
Simple as that.
Any mitigating factors offered by the driver of the pickup do not change the facts of the event.

I bet you have never ran a red light/stop sign, and never will. Your posts on this subject involve a lot of profiling and very little substance IMO.

I appreciate the advice on hand position..I thought I was OK with hands on the wheel - where the finger grooves are on the wheel...where I've always put them, at 10 and 2...but I guess I'll have to get used to 3 and 9...

I have actually experienced it, on a fairly new vehicle and well maintained. Granted it was caused by a defect, but no one would or did find it during normal maintenance. Later models have hoses repositioned to prevent it. Luckily there was a shoulder present and I was able to avoid an accident, but had it been on approach to a red light I assure you the remaining brake performance even with ABS would not have stopped the vehicle before the intersection.

In other news:

No question that is totaled.
Glad the sis is mostly O.K.

Both of those positions are about the same. They provide the most control and ability to swerve either direction and maintain that control. Out of those two choices, do what makes you the most comfortable when driving. I don't want to totally derail this thread, so I won't go in depth on reasoning and technique.

Mmmmm, NSX...

What was your questions? Hahaha.

She has a bad habit of laying on the horn for every little thing. Says her automatic response was to slam the horn, even though she steered while trying to avoid the accident but the truck still ran into her.

That looks like it was a pretty nasty wreck. Glad your sister walked away without serious injuries.

To the individual(s) who are so self righteous about the mistake the other driver made.... get over it. People screw up, and you will too. Learn to forgive and move on.

Define "reasonably" maintained.

I had the brakes fail on my VW. I forget how old, would guess around the 5 year old mark. 175kmiles. Put my foot on the pedal, and it went to the floor. It was early in the morning, so w/o thinking about I just pumped the pedal few times, *before* I realized what was going on. Thankfully, the system responded.

The fault? Pad material fell off one of the pads. Rust under the pad or something. The three other pads had like 3/4 of the material left, at least half, and wear was looking good. BUT technically I wasn't checking the calipers every 5k, let alone removing pads to check for rust. All I was doing was brake fluid flushes every 2-3 years. [I did have to replace the rears at 165k, one was down to rivets, the rest were not too far behind.]

Glad the sister made out ok. In the end that's all that matters.

They tried putting her hand together the day of the accident but it didn't work, she went in for surgery today to put in a metal rod and screws to hold it all together

not good...

Just saw this thread, Artem.

Sorry to hear about your sister's accident, I hope she recovers fully and quickly.

Sad to see an R18 leave the UOA pool.
