Well, so much for my Civic lasting me for many years and reaching 300k+

My sister managed to wreck it and it looks like it will be totaled by the insurance company.

Civic:

The pickup truck that ran a redlight and got hit:

My sister was the only one in the car, so i don't understand why the passenger side air bags deployed but, whatever.

She would have walked away from the accident had it not been for this:

07 Civic EX total @ 165k miles. I'm glad I didn't waste much money doing 3k OCIs and various other anal money spending maintenance.

Geez, you can see how far sideways the front of the pickup was pushed. That looks pretty violent. I hope everyone involves is OK, in relative terms at least. Your sister's arm doesn't look happy but glad it's not worse.

Broken wrist? Sorry to hear.

Yeah, as they say "if you want god to laugh, make a plan." This is also why I don't build huge oil/filter stashes for my car. You never know if tomorrow is going to be the day...

Ouch, thankfully your sister is still alive. Wish her a speedy recovery.

I'm suprised there isn't more dramatic looking damage on the Civic. The entire front section on that pickup looks pushed to the right.

This spring has been pretty rough with the car crashes. I had three crashes happen right in front of me in the span of two weeks. I no longer bother leaving ten minutes early to get to work on time in case of heavy traffic because right now I'm seeing about four days a week there's at least a half hour detour due to a crash. The boss can accept that I'm going to be late a lot until summer or he can fire me, his call, and I don't much care either way.

This spring is just a lot worse than usual with people failing to drive while they're driving. Be ready for it. Have an "out" whenever possible.

People with SUVs/pickups think they are indestructible, they forget that the taller more unstable vehicle will roll over. Many deaths due to those rock-solid trucks landing atop their unsuspecting owners.

Not true...I don't feel indestructible or whatever in my SUV. Actually the several times I have almost got whacked were by people in cars. Got to watch these assumptions as some of us drive carefully regardless of what we are 'piloting.'

Artem:

Glad to see that your Civic did a good job protecting your sister. Looks like it was a hard hit.

So what's the new ride going to be?

(and it seems to always work like that - make a long term vehicle plan then sure as all get out...)

Glad your sister is mostly ok. Now you can give her grief for the next 20 years!

I'm glad your sister is okay.
A broken bone is not that bad, although it would be better were she uninjured, of course
In this case at least, the Honda did a better job of protecting its driver than did the truck.
Since the guy in the pickup ran a red light, he deserves whatever injuries he received.
Some people seem to think that traffic signals don't apply to them, or they're too busy playing with a phone to pay attention to the situation around them.

Wow, that seems a bit harsh. that is why it is called an accident. Guy made a mistake, doesn't say he was drunk, or texting. He may have just not have seen it. No one wants to have an accident.

Back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Not harsh at all.
You screw up, put someome else at mortal risk and destroy some other person's property and you don't have a whole lot coming.
There is a distiction between carelessness and an accident that should be made.
Running a red light is either careless or arrogant.
It isn't an accident.
It is everyone's responsibility to pay attention when they drive.
When someone causes a collision, as the driver of the pickup did, he has little sympathy coming.
He injured a woman and destroyed someone's personal property.
He might have killed the woman in the Civic.
Any injuries he might have received will remind him to pay better attention when operating a motor vehicle.

Was that arm broken enough that it is now misaligned??

Pickup tipped over?

First, so glad she is ok. Looks like it was nasty, but also looks like the car performed admirably. Honestly, the sheet metal damage dowsnt look that bad to my untrained eye. Of course airbags are what? $1k each to replace? Totaling is in the cards. Too bad do many unnecessary airbags went off.

Glad she is ok.

That's a little rough isn't it? Considering the truck ran the red light?

My thought too.

1. Unless she stole it I'm presuming you let her borrow it.

2. As mentioned the other guy ran the light.

3. That wrist fracture HAS to hurt.

4. Based on other people with similar injuries that wrist may never be quite the same.

I understand being upset, but count your blessings. Your sister could have been killed. The car will be replaced on some level.

I envision it like the truck ran up on the front end of the Civic like it was a ramp and flipped it. This isn't your normal outcome of a small economy car vs. a half ton truck. Your sister is very lucky.

So is the guy in the truck.
He could otherwise be looking at felony time.
All it would take is some aggravating factor, like other drivers testifying to his aggressive driving at the time, any detectible blood alcohol level or phone use at the time of the event.
