My 2007 Corolla 1.8 took one for the team today. I let my grandfather take it to sacreamento and he flipped it. Fortunentally he is fine which is the most important part, little bumps and bruises but nothing major. The Cars roof and sides are toast, all windows broken, caved in etc.. It was a good car with over 60k miles.

Hes fine, he apparently was getting back on the free way when he noticed he was going the wrong direction. He was going about 60 and slammed his brakes and I guess tried to turn the car and flipped it.

I don't want to share the road with someone like that. I'm glad he's OK but it sounds like he's not really fit to drive.

I hate to sound negative and I am glad no one was seriously injured, but they put white lines on one side and yellow on the other on ramps so there really should be no reason to be going the wrong way.

Glad he's OK. His family members should really check to see if he's still fit to drive. We went through this with my MIL, she was not fit to drive. My wife and her sisters took the keys away from her, and my FIL who was also not fit to drive. He had hidden a third set of keys figuring this day would come. They decided to go shopping, and my MIL made an illegal left turn, into a busy shopping center exit, and totaled the car. No injuries, and no more car for them.

Eye exams are an important part of renewing a DL, but I think a reevaluation would be most helpful. Base it on time, say every 3 years, age, or whatever you want, I think it should be done. Pass the reevaluation you continue to drive, you flunk, get another shot, flunk again no cigar. Since this is America and Baseball is a favorite sport we can even go to three strikes and you're out. Something needs to be done though. Driving is a privilege, not a right.

JMO Flame away!

BTW I am not picking on the OP's grandfather accidents do happen. I'm bring out a point.

No hes not allowed to go on long trips anymore. It was all his fault and he should have known better, just a good thing no one got hurt. He drives a 5.3 silverado and wanted to use the corolla to go pick up my grandmother and a few other people. It actually is more comfortable than the extended cab truck. GOOD thing it was in my car than his truck or he might have been toast.

I agree with what you said. when I worked in the hospital, I had an 89 year old patient who rearended someone. she was hurt pretty badly, her false teeth got knocked in the back of her throat, but she claimed it was her first accident and she's very good driver. This lady could barely see, very frail, and I could tell she was senile just from talking to her. I was curious and asked the family. "is she going to keep driving?" The family got huffy and puffy about it and was adamant that she could still drive. I bet no one wants to babysit 89 year old grandma because it would cramp their lifestyle. so they will keepin on..keepin on..while endangering everyone else on the road...Keep that mind of the elderly as the baby boomers keep getting older

Not in a roll over with weak / obsoleted roof strength vs vehicle weight, and the high center of gravity will make roll over much worse.

Not only is he lucky to be alive but he's also lucky that he didn't hurt anyone else.
Worse yet, imagine if he was driving the Silverado and hit several cars head on. Ouch.

If he were to hit several cars head on than I definetely would want to be in the Silverado over a Corolla.

Oh, that's so reassuring - he can only possible injure or maime people in the area, not out of town!

Sorry, this really bugs me - senile drivers who won't give up the keys are JUST AS BAD as drunk crivers that won't either.

Man up and report him to the authorities before he kills someone - just seen too much of that.
