Eye exams are an important part of renewing a DL, but I think a reevaluation would be most helpful. Base it on time, say every 3 years, age, or whatever you want, I think it should be done. Pass the reevaluation you continue to drive, you flunk, get another shot, flunk again no cigar. Since this is America and Baseball is a favorite sport we can even go to three strikes and you're out. Something needs to be done though. Driving is a privilege, not a right.
JMO Flame away!
BTW I am not picking on the OP's grandfather accidents do happen. I'm bring out a point.
I agree with what you said. when I worked in the hospital, I had an 89 year old patient who rearended someone. she was hurt pretty badly, her false teeth got knocked in the back of her throat, but she claimed it was her first accident and she's very good driver. This lady could barely see, very frail, and I could tell she was senile just from talking to her. I was curious and asked the family. "is she going to keep driving?" The family got huffy and puffy about it and was adamant that she could still drive. I bet no one wants to babysit 89 year old grandma because it would cramp their lifestyle. so they will keepin on..keepin on..while endangering everyone else on the road...Keep that mind of the elderly as the baby boomers keep getting older
