Sure, but not under severe service.

Would I be pushing it too much for doing 6K? Winter is bad up here

A look at my son's filter from a spring oil change after last winter which was a really hard winter.

I think it requires 5w-20 for one interval but not two and says 0w-20 is better. And no they don't require synthetic.

Hard to say. For reference, here is my UOA after 6K miles and two winters. That's on an engine with a fairly large sump (7qt) and no DI. The lab has condemned the oil due to elevated TAN...

The manual recommends 5K miles or 8K kilometers for severe conditions for full synthetic oil, in this case 0w20 or 5w20.

Don't feel too bad.

My car is factory spec'd for 3k mile OCI's! With M1 0w-40 right on the cap.

The reason is fuel dilution in my case due to the tune, but I'm sure mazda is worried about moisture, acids, etc.

My '08 Scion tC specifies 5,000 mile oil changes with normal conditions, with 0W-20 being recommended and 5W-20 also acceptable. My 1995 Acura Integra recommended 7,500 miles back in 1994 for normal driving and oils have gotten so much better since then... Granted, I always stick to 5,000 miles or less on my vehicles anyways, but it makes you wonder. These engines aren't direct injected, either.

Personally, I don't think it's conservative to never run an OCI much longer than 5K miles on a DI engine. I'd call that prudent and depending on the engine and your driving habits ( independent of the manual ) downright scholarly. I'm not going to run 10K mile OCIs on a 1.6 liter GDI just because it's synthetic oil and two UOAs have come back looking decent.

That's a bosch tho, hopefully I won't be killing the ultra else I will be kicked out of the Fram club lol

The G5 has 0W-20 TGMO and a Fram Ultra in it now. We'll see how the filter looks in the spring change. Engine specs 5w30, but it sounds really good when hot.
-31C tonight (without wind chill), that's -24F.

+1

I have 2013 Mazda CX-5 with the skyactive engine. Just did UOA and oil had 5K miles on it. 0W20 sheared down and high percentage of fuel. UOA -- Castrol EDGE 0w20 - 4,892mi - 2013 Mazda CX-5

Kind of getting to thin to see KV100 drop all the way down to 5.33. I'd be more comfortable either topping off using M1 0w-40 to increase viscosity slightly or maybe a little Ceratec to protect the parts. Fuel dilution can get pretty severe and thin out the oil film thickness too far.

I always advise people to add Ceratec wear protection additive when dropping down to 0w-20 in a 5w30 engine, although it may not matter much if you're not driving hard, and it is winter after all. Seems it may help to have the Ceratec when its that cold too! Any extra AW additive like straight Liquimoly MOS2 may help too.

I assume this is for an 5.7 SRT8? Lol.

Perhaps the manufacturer is assuming the vast majority of the owners will drive them like they stole them. Funny though because the 5.7 is easy on oil.
