reverse is grinding after fluid change

I change the manual transmission fluid on my wifes 99 Mustang GT (car has 40K miles) with Amsoil ATF and now we both noticed that everytime you shift it in reverse, after you depress the clutch you have to wait awhile before shifting to reverse to avoid the grinding sound. It wasn't like that before I change the fluid. BTW I have Amsoil ATF too on my 02 Mustang GT and doesn't grind when it's shifted into reverse. should I try a different fluid? Thanks for any help

In my BMW, which is specced for ATF in the trans, if I use redline MTL, I can hear the synchros spooling up when moving the shifter. When really cold I get some very odd noises. Not the dreaded grind, but weird whirring sounds all the same.

I believe that was due to the MTL being thicker/heavier than ATF, especially when cold.

Maybe the mustang specifies a heavier fluid and the one that youre using is just too light? WHat is the specified fluid and its weight?

Try shifting into 1st gear before shifting into Reverse. Amsoil ATF is an excellent fluid.

Do those Mustangs have the T5 transmission?

I always shifted into 4th before shifting into reverse(but any gear will work). This will solve your problem.

How long do you have to wait? Ford specifications require the transmission to have gear clash 2 to 5 seconds after depressing the clutch pedal. Less than 2 seconds and the bearings are too tight, more than 5 seconds and the bearings are too loose.

The 99 GT has the T5 transmission, when I drained the old fluid it was red ( ATF like) manual calls for ATF mercon. BTW the 99 GT doesn't have the gear clash I'm experiencing with the 02 GT when shifting to 2nd gear before the transmission warms up. As for the 02 GT is has the TR 3650 transmission and the manual calls for Mercon ATF fluid as well. I try and time it next time see how long I have to wait after depressing the clutch so it deosn't grind in reverse. and also I've noticed on both the these cars I almost have to shift it to 1st gear everytime and release the clutch a little ( to get the transmission to move a bit) before it they will engage in reverse. thanks for the suggestions

mustangs haven't used a T-5 since 1995.

they use a T-45 from 06 - 00

Double check engine/trans mounts, and clutch mechanicals if adjustable or bleedable. And, recheck fluid level.

Then try another fluid in the picky transmission.

Pennzoil synchromesh, Redline MTL, Amsoil MTF, SpecialtyFormulations MTFGlide or Syncroglide, Neo MTF, Torco MTF, BG Syncroshift II, RoyalPurple Synchromax........

Mobil1 ATF would be my 1st choice since its available at most autoparts stores.
