Retiring early... Geographic arbitrage

As a world traveler, I do know that moving and living abroad can be wonderful. There are endless possibilities, some choices could actually extend one's lifespan. But a near universal complication is that being older and broke makes the better locations impossible.

How people enter here and thrive is not the worldwide norm. Some worthwhile locations have a financial minimum, a long waiting list and so on. The options are limited for many of us.

There is a place in Indonesia called Sipirok. They have an awful stretch of road there called Batu Jomba. People used to get stuck in traffic for hours, then go through an extremely bumpy experience with a chance of overturning. And yet they would be all smiles after all that experience. No road rage, no shouting or fights. I think approach like that would extend life instead of stressing out over things you have no control and rushing through life.

Have you run the numbers?

My motivation is not the country taking a dump. I just don't want to work all my life and then just croak one day, or worse yet, go through a chronic cancer case and suffer a horrible death. I haven't had a vacation in like 6 years. It's always work-work-work and for what?
Yes. We could live quite well on our pensions.

Getting shot in the streets can happen anywhere. I am convinced that in addition to our lax gun laws it is mainly the fact that the population has exploded since 1952 and there are just more people out there that get upset and shoot someone. More a case of statistics than geography.

There are a lot of places that you can go that will be cheaper to live. They may not have the health facilities or conveniences that you have become accustomed to. If funds are tight, there are several virtual vacation and virtual travel sites on line. Go and virtually visit places that you are interested in. Once you have narrowed down the selection, take a week or month and visit your destination before up and moving. By the way, many countries have minimum financial requirements before you can move in. Another thing to check.

Good luck!

Complaining here..........I never plan early retirement, but always plan the inevitable outside of my control such as my job is being replaced by India. So, I saved and saved some more. I am not going to work as a greeter or HD. I will use the rule of 55.

If you are ~49, not married, are healthy, unattached to a home/property, reasonably happy, brother you are RICH in my book! I should have read the brochure a bit better back in the day. LOL

Work hard, save your money. You are young yet.

Yeah but nothing wrong for those who do. Some people actually like working and being around others.
Kind of demeaning sometimes the way people post this. (Im fully retired but see nothing wrong for those who choose to work part time)

My accountant, just passed away at the age in his mid to later 70s. Very wealthy, his name still on the NY firm along with others in the group of a rather sizable business accounting and legal firm. He was my account for about 40 years. He didnt have to work, was a great guy, cut down some of his accounts and worked a more easy schedule because he liked people and conversing with people.
Im just saying that because an older person chooses to spend part of their day in a business doesnt mean they are destitute or have to work.

Your interpretation of my statement is way off. "I am not going to work as a greeter or HD."? Just so you know my background, I lived thru genocide and tortured, separated from my mom, family since I was 9 years old and been on my own, without anyone, ever since. Arrived in this country when I was 15 yo in 1983 with just 1 shorts and t-shirt. I do not look down on people.

We most likely will die from Cancer, a heart attack or a stroke whether we are a vagrant or a billionaire. Vacations are a waste of income.

Seems like you did good.

I've seen delusional expats - old farts that think a woman 30 years younger than them loves them because who they are.
Yeah but does it matter? :ROFLMAO:
From a practical sense, not really. In the distant past, schoolgirls used to regularly say that they had 3 boys vying for their affections. The girls knew even as kids, that affection was the prize. Wealthy men clearly know the score too, and it bothers them not one bit. In fact it is often a far nicer choice than the bitter cold ex.

Thanks for the reply, yes, my interpretation was off in your case.
However, here in the US many times a statement like that is taken as a negative.
Heck, it’s not even many times, almost all the time it’s looked down upon

You obviously did well for yourself. A true survivor, much of our younger population now has had life too easy and not prepared for the real world

Sorry to hear that. It's tough to not have any generational wealth or safety net to rely on ...

Did your mom and sister make it?

I think it’s more difficult for men wanting to marry to find a woman that wants to settle down.

Quality women want the cream of the crop and not a loser with no future.

I have a long ways to go but will likely retire abroad. No good reason to stay here - it’s technically one of the most expensive places to live.

Having said that, retiring at 50 sounds pretty early. Perhaps you need to look for a job that you like better. I really couldn’t imagine going to work every day doing something I hated.
