Retiring early... Geographic arbitrage

Yeah, I wish. My wife's parents died young. 55 & 63. NY residents. Single family home. As per the estate lawyer, her & her brother paid an inheritance tax. House was paid off. My wife has PTSD from losing her parents so young, and the lawyers, and the taxes. She's done with NY anyway. She has Rheumatoid Arthritis and has to move a low humidity state anyway. Humidity and the freezing temps of NY are debilitating for her. Just gonna get worse as she ages. Her own doctor's told her to move west of the Gulf of Mexico as soon as she could. So there are other factors at play here also. Maybe her estate lawyer screwed her ? I don't know. But the place we're going is just west of Carson City, about 30 or so miles. A small retirement town with plenty of things for us old folks to do. Happy wife, happy life.. As long as I have a little garage to putz around in, I'm happy too :)

30 miles west of Carson City, and you'll be in California. I can get cold and snowy in the area.

So, it's not 30 miles, maybe 15, I dunno. Kinda hard judging by a map. The main thing is we picked the state and narrowed down the town. That alone took a lot of research and time. Yes, it gets cold, but not Arctic Blast cold..and we'll be old. Where we goin in the winter ? Skiing / Snowboarding ?? We got 10 years to figure it all out. The main concern is the humidity for my wife. We'll be outside more in spring /summer/fall. In the meantime, we are enjoying what time we have left in these crazy global political situations arising. BUT, NEW YORK is no place for blue collar people to retire.....and that's our category. You need lots of money to retire in New York. We're nothing but Union peasants.
