Replacing sink and faucet assembly, what are these slots?

Replacing vanity in bathroom, new faucet includes drain.

These slots seem to be located between the top seal and lower seal. This appears to allow water to accumulate between the drain and the wall of the sink drain hole.

Unless I'm missing something, but looks to be an ideal recipe for funk to grow between the tight clearance of the drain tube and sink.

If you look at the top front/back inner edge of your new sink, you should see a round or oval opening that serves to drain overflow when the water approaches the upper rim. This sink overflow opening has an internal channel to drain the water to the drain pipe through the slots you see in the photos.

Ahh, copy that...duh.....🤦‍♂️

It's been a very long time since I've installed one. This sink doesn't have an overflow so it caught me off guard.

Thanks! Lol.
