removing security lug nut

I was going to change the brake fluid and manual transmission fluid but realized the key for the security lug nut was missing. How would you remove a security lug nut if you lost the key? It looks like its has splines on there. The lug nuts are recessed so its a little more challenging to access with something like locking pliers. I'm not sure if those extractor sockets work, don't want to cause more damage by stripping them. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Most people will buy a socket slightly too small, hammer it on there, and then break it loose. I've also heard of people doing that but using threadlocker or even welding the two.

Ask your local tires store if they can help you. Many have keys.

Yep, hammer a socket on there and go to town with getting it off.

Find a socket one size too small and hammer it on with a big hammer.

Use a socket from a good company that has a warranty. Cause it is going to get MESSED UP!!!

Oh and use a 1/2" breaker bar to get it off. It has about a 2 foot handle for lots of leverage then just stand on the breaker bar and put your weight on it to get it off.

As opposed to breaking tools, you could ask around your local enthusiasts to see if somebody's got the same one that you can borrow. Very common problem with mk4 VWs as most (if not all?) came from the factory with a 'security' bolt at each wheel.

I hate those $@*#ing things with a passion so I ordered four new OEM non-locking lug bolts, replaced all of them and donated the four lugs and the key (and a six pack of beer) to my favorite mechanic.
