Removing Heavy Calcium Rings From Toilet Bowls

I own rentals for years. So cal water is very high in calcium. All you do is put a half gallon of pool acid in bowl and soak. No pumice needed.

Be very careful using Muriatic Acid indoors. The fumes are very bad when inhaled. Not to mention they will rust metal almost immediately. If you have guns, it takes almost nothing for the fumes to cause instantaneous rusting.

Thank you for the info. But my guns are in the safes at my home or in my vehicles never in my rental homes. Fumes are bad toilet seat is down flush it the next day.

It would be best if you could stretch something like Saran Wrap over the top of the bowl to seal it, after adding the acid.

Chanca Piedra

I was going through Bitog checking out if there was any water softener info on here and noticed this relic of a post about kidney stones, of which I have had many. Most city water is, but some shallow mountain wells have Ca/Mg/Fe. Kinda like a UOA. Not that it's bad.

We had some S compounds too. Easily reduced. We have a softener, air oxidizer, UV light, and RO for drinking. Our well is really deep. Like 40 feet. Hahahahaha.

Bring over a bunch of teenagers so you will have a large supply of half empty Cokes to pour on the buildup …

Pour a cup of two of vinegar into the overfill tube in the tank. Clean the system from the top down.

Sumas mountain and all the Mt Baker foothills have pretty decent mineral deposits. Gold too. In limited pockets

i have a softener and carbon filter on municipal water and still get build up at the water line. it’s a chore to scrub it off. i will try some of the recommendations here, thank you all!

Is your cold water softened? Some homes are piped to only soften the hot.

I have 2 toilets where I had to deal with this. (Yellow / orange calcium rings at the waterline of the bowl). My wife tried all the cleaners. CLR, Lime Away, Rustoleum Rust Remover Spray, Mister Clean "Magic Eraser". Name it.

None worked with any satisfaction. So I tried a small Scotchbrite Pad, (Tan, dark Earth color). And some Lime Away to wet it with. 100% success! The calcium deposits were heavy, and raised up over the glazed surface of the bowl. You could feel them with your fingernail.

I used only one finger, pressing lightly directly over the ring, using back and forth cleaning strokes. It took a bit of doing, but all of the calcium stain rings vanished. And when I dragged my fingernail over the surface, I couldn't feel anything.

I washed and wiped the surface dry, and used a magnifying glass with a bright LED flashlight, and I couldn't see anywhere that I had scratched the ceramic glaze of the bowl itself. It really worked much better than I thought it would.

I always worried about glazing damage, but good to hear of your success and thanks for sharing the formula. Im very curious as to which exactly which coach write product you used as it sounds pretty easy.

Ring deposits here varied with my experimentation in well water treatment, my current setup has slowed buildup to the point where after about a year I have the faintest line in one of three new toto toilets.

Another method that works is scrubbing the ring using a miele dishwashing tablet directly , its got 7 or so enzymatic ingredients helping breaking down the ring but its still a good bit of scrubbing.
