Redneck Oil filter ADBV testing

I decided to try something out of boredom and test to see how long these filters will retain their oil. Each filter is filled full of oil (5w30) with a m22 drain plugged screwed down tight (30 ft/lbs). I plan to do this with a used fram ultra xg2 and further on down the line a used fram ph2 and maybe some others. The reason for me doing this is on a 4.6 modular motor the oil filter is mounted horizontal and I have a weird phobia about using oil filters with fiber ends in horizontally mounted applications and just for the heck of it also . I'm storing the oil filters horizontally.

It would be interesting to see if you notice a difference between silicone ADBV filters and nitrile ADBV filters, and to see how much leakage there is (if any).

The fram has a silicon abv and the supertech is the same filter but with a nitrile rubber.

I will be heating these filters up to 200F and letting them cool down and repeat probably a dozen or so times. But I want to wait till I have a used Fram PH2 and a used & new Fram XG2 along side them to see if theres any leakage and if there is if there's a noticeable difference between new and used.

I generally only do that in the Wally World store. The have all kindsa extra filters there.

No, the supertech is a champion ecore the Fram is it's own design, the Supertech MP series filters are the same as their ST series counterparts but have a silicone ADBV.

The MP2 supertech is a ecore, but the ST2 supertech is a fram extra guard with a nitrile rubber abv, I'll post a link to one of my prior posts.

That test would be closer to realistic if you connect a tube or pipe to the threaded opening, then turn the end of it up so your oil won't run out that way, but air can enter.

I did this ADBV test a while ago on a Purolator PureOne. Didn't even plug the center tube ... it was open to the atmoshere and the oil still stayted inside the filter for a week.

Drainage setup for the filter to test the ADBV. While the filter was still pretty hot I put it base side down in a funnel and let the hot oil drain out from the center tube, and then left it to drain for a whole week. After the week of draining, I then jammed some folded over Q-tip sticks in 3 of the base plate holes to open up the ADBV to let the guts drain out in a clean glass. What drained out was what the ADBV was holding back for a week.

Results of the oil trapped by the ADBV - it came out to 6 ounces. A rough calculation of the volume between the center core and the can shell showed to be about 13.7 cu-in. Six ounces of fluid will take up 10.8 cu-in, so this means the ADBV was keeping the entire space between the can and center core full of oil indefinitely.

Thermal cycling them may cause oil pressure to build up inside them, but I guess that is just a more robust way of tesing how the ADBV seals.

The fiber end caps don't have any affect on the ADBV.

Honda and Subaru use Fram for their aftermarket service filters, the Denso(or really, Toyoda Boshoku) filters Toyota uses have no end caps and ACDelco filters are E-cores. You’ll be fine.
