Story about "testing" Oil filter ADBV in store

lol.....Was this a forum post somewhere? I believe I've heard/read about this on these forums before actually, someone doing it particularly with the "XG" and "TG" line of FRAM filters......

supposidely if you don't get the "chipmonk cheek effect" while blowing into the oil filter, the filter is deemed defective...? or something like that? Or is it the "other way around", if you blow thru the filter, and the air goes through, the filter is "good"...? I can't recall....



I guess that explains why so many of the TGs and XGs are always out of their shrink-wrap at my local Walmart....? lol....kinda crazy, lookin like your doing mouth-to-mouth to an oil filter lol.

Not sure what to think of this thread? Serious or not? Several thoughts though.

-I don't use the orange can, too expensive for construction.
-I do inspect all filters though prior to purchase. (Except from Amazon, of course.)
-I don't blow in the can though, as part of inspection. Some here swear by the "test", that said, not I'm not certain it reliably predicts/proves a functional/defective adbv.
Does air accurately replicate a column of oil?

Never seen a Tough Guard encased in shrink wrap. IIRC, the Fram HM also is, but that filter is a gimmick joke.

As for the XG out of the shrink wrap, several times I've seen that it was because some low life had swapped it out with an orange can. Very doubtful the average Wally filter buy is sophisticated enough to be thinking about testing a filter's adbv.

The "ADBV Blow Test" will tell you if there is something majorly wrong with the ADBV sealing performance. If the ADBV was defective, or put in backwards, or some other manufacturing error occurred, then the test might catch it before the filter gets put on the car.

I got 5 PureOne filters from Amazon and they were all made within the last 2 months (lot codes), and they all passed the ADBV Blow Test.

How do you decifer the code. I have two P1's as examples. First is a PL10241 I recently got from Amazon. Second is an older PL14610 I got at AAP.

A) FO4C20D1
B) FO2A04E1

If I recall correctly, the date code is the bold part of the number (see bold red in your quote). Other parts of the code say what line and shift it was made on.

A = 2009
B = 2010
C = 2011 ... etc.

So F04C20D1 was made Month 04, 2011, Day 20
And F02A04E1 was made Month 02, 2009, Day 04

So exactly where do you blow? lol. Down the middle? I mean, those PH2's are quite large, where exactly on the filter are people "blowing" to test the ADBV?

Typically, the screw goes through the "middle" of the spin-on filters, so I'm guessing one would have to blow through all 4-5 of the "holes" along the outside edge of the filter?

That would have been funny (and embarrassing). The store personnel probably thought it was a new way for kids to get high.

OK, cool. Never would have figured out the letter indicating the year. Makes sense though, since 09 would be the first year for the gold texture P1 design.

Oil enters a filter through the small holes, and exits through the big one. To prevent the oil from flowing backwards when the engine is shut off, the rubber valve closes over the small holes. If you blow through the center hole it will apply pressure to the valve to make it seal over the small holes. If it leaks with air, it will probably leak on the engine.
