FRAM PH4967 ??? (with pic's.)

Went down to my local Walmart where I go 90% of the time to any of them. Walked back to the oil, filter, etc. isle. Grapped this FRAM PH4967 and this is what it looked like. Grabbed the one underneath it and it was the exact same. Grabbed the one behind it and it was the same. I stopped there -- bad bach of oil filters? Could not get a good enough angle with the camera to see internals. Checked the TG4967 & FE4967 -- they looked normal. Was not going to open a XG box without purchasing. When I wiped the grime between my fingers -- it just blended right into my skin and left zero residue rather quickly.View attachment 254550View attachment 254551View attachment 254552
You say you weren’t going to open the XG box? Are they taped shut? All the more reason to check them (if you’re buying one), that little tape dot can peel off without damaging the cardboard.

Looks like the PH line had an issue. I don’t know if I’d discount the entire lineup because of this incident, though. Did you bring this to an associate’s (or dept. manager’s) attention?

Very possible a ‘customer’ did this.

Since subject broached several times now in this thread, fwiw I disagree with any posited conclusion that a WM customer did this. So hypothetically, a customer decided to vandalize 'at least' 3 topic PH4967 (the 3 examined by OP). In so doing the customer carefully made sure that the material, whatever it is, only got on the metal baseplate and not the adbv it covers (nor sealing gasket)? Since the metal around inlet holes is blackened but adbv normal, that would require each inlet to be carefully filled then removed? That's one very detailed and determined WM customer Fram vandal. 😉

As for breaking the seal on the XG spin on in store, said before I'm not a fan of that. If 'I' wanted one, I'd buy it and sometime after purchase, inspect, and return if required. That said, since I have no interest in current XG, moot point now. My.02
