I've got a 2002 Subaru 2.5L N/A Impreza with 52,000 on it. I'm going for the Redline this change, and a 7000 OCI. I live in Souther California. I may make 1 short trip to the snow over the winter.

I drive very hard, though I don't track or auto-x.

I've read great feedback on the 5/40 viscocity in this engine. I can't get it in time, however, so my choices are 5/30, 10/30, or 10/40.

Any suggestions?

With RL, the general rule is that you can run one grade lower then what is called for. I'd use the 10w-30 year round in So Cal.

So it runs thicker?

Very good! Thank you!

The Elves are going to cry, I'm leaving for the Red...

I agree w/buster: 10W30 year-round. You might give the 5W40 a try some time in that engine, but I'd run the 10W30. Actually, I have run the 10W30 in a couple different cars in the desert (Yuma). It works great!

I ran a 2005 2.5L NA Outback in Colorado on Redline 5W-40 and 5W-30.

I ran 10,000 mile intervals and tested the 5W-40 and had great numbers.

I thought the 5W-40 was worth trying because I also drive hard, and the 5000 to 10,600 foot clims up some of the passes mean sustained wide open throttle.

I think 5W-30 or 5W-40 Redline at 7000 mile intervals would be a very good choice.

I also think you could look at 10,000 to 12,000 mile intervals with an oil filter swap or two, and top up oil and some oil testing.

But I feel like 7000 miles is best for me.
