This is the latest UOA from my 2003 330Ci BMW transmission.
This was about 60% new D4 fluid and 40% from the factory fill.
I don't have a TAN on my VOA of the D4 fluid. Fluid was changed with D4 and the filter was replaced this time. The pan was pretty clean, just a little grey gunk on the magnets.

It seems to shift better with the D4.

Blackstone coments:

The viscosity of this sample was normal for an ATF, measuring in the SAE 10W range. This oil
was only in use for 17,100 miles and wear metals decreased overall. The wear rate (ppm/mile) was a bit
higher than before but you always get carryover metal from the previous oil since you only changed about
65% of it. So, as far as wear is concerned, everything looks good at 81,000 miles. The oil's TAN was 3.1,
fairly acidic in nature, but with wear looking good, we don't think it's a problem level. No moisture was found
and no insolubles were present in this sample.

Looks ok and should keep getting better.

With the mileage on the factory fill, I would've flushed it out completely.

But, any maintenance is better than none. Stick with those refills and tranny should last a long time.

D4 seems to have normally high TAN's.

I will probably do a drain and fill every two years unless I start driving more miles a year. BMW suggests a 100,000 mile trans fluid / filter change. I wanted to change it more often than that. It does seem shift better/smoother with the D4 fluid.

I did have a warranty service done on the trans, it started downshifting roughly when coming to a stop. The dealer installed a software update that fixed that issue.
