Since we're in the middle of a heat wave right now I thought it would be a good time to get Red Line MRV spec's @-40 degrees:

0W-20 .....27,000cP
0W-30 .....28,000cP
0W-40 .....30,000cP

Hey Caterham, what's MRV? Why should I care?

I've seen a lot of MRV specs given at -30 and -35°C, but I don't think I've ever seen values given for -40°C.

Do you know why they are so high? Is it because they are ester based?

Was thinking the same thing, they aren't actually that good at all.

Not that you will ever REALLY need them, but still, for and all-ester 0W, I'd expect better - Petro-Canada, Pennzoil, and Kendall all best these with the use of group-III base oils.

0W oils MRV test is done at -40C, as the cranking test is done at -35C.

In comparison:

M1 0W40 has MRV of 31,000 at -40C, slightly higher than Redline

M1 0W30 AFE has MRV of 13,250 at -40C, a lot lower than Redline

M1 0W20 AFE has MRV of 9200 at -40C, a lot lower than Redline

I don't think anybody buys RL for it's extreme cold performance. The main advantage of it's POE based formulation is high temp' stability.

What I find interesting is the limited difference between the three grades comparied to most oils like M1 for example. I suspect the only difference between the three oils is their VII content, which is none for the 0W-20, very little for the 0W-30 and the most in the 0W-40.

Yep from Dave.
As a point of interest, 21Rouge got the MRV spec' for the 0W-30 last fall and was told it was 30,000cP, consiquently I was expecting the 0W-40 to be much higher.

Interesting. I'd been very curious about these. M1, like you have told me earlier, really spanks them here. I'm curious of the curve as it goes from -40 to 0 to +40.

Anybody have the MRV specs for the Pennzoil Platinum lineup? Pennzoil still does not have PDSs available at their website.
