Recommendations for 20W-50 motor oil

I thought the same about the Pennzoil conventional 20w-50 and 25w-50 but their website does not publish zinc or phosphorous numbers and there is no mention of them in the website product description, while Valvoline does. So although the Pennzoil may be a good choice for older engines and flat tappets, if they what us to use it they should say so. Valvoline VR1 conventional seems like a good and well-known choice.

Any current 10W-40 has high enough minimum HTHS to meet the 3.5 target Mercedes had in mind for this engine.
I've found Valvoline Maxlife in this grade to be very satisfactory in my old BMW and even posted a UOA with it back in 2012.
I also like M1 15W-50 in this engine and then there are many 15W-40 HDEOs that can be bought really cheaply. The old BMW is happy with this as well.
No bad choices and no real need for 20W-50 although I did use this grade summers in our last old Benz since it was the recommended grade for really hot weather.
This is true for my 318i as well, but I've grown more daring as well as more knowledgeable over the intervening years.
