I was fairly lucky with my first B5 S4. I bought it used around 2012 and it had tons of issues but once I sorted those out it was fairly reliable. I had some issues related to modifications but can't blame the car for those lol. After initially replacing tons of gaskets, sensors, fixing vacuum leaks, etc lol it was solid for like four years. Only major issue was needing a starter but it had over 130k miles at that point.
My wife had a B5 A4 and then a MKV GTI and both of those cars were massive piles
it was just one thing after another with those.
So toss a coin I guess lol. In my opinion, it seems European cars are less tolerant of neglect than others. The first owner is late on one oil change and now it's a lifetime problems, meanwhile a Toyota Camry just chugs on and on like who even needs oil?
