Hey guys,

I need some help and advice on getting some tires and a four wheel alignment for my 2003 Hyundai Elantra GT. In June, I was involved in an accident where a local gang banger hit my whole driver side of the car and ended up chipping up my front driver side rims and tire. Due to the accident, the alignment became screwed and the car now pulls to the left all the time; therefore putting unncessary wear and tear on the front sets of tires. I need to know if I would be better off purchasing a new set of tires or a slightly used set of tires and going with the four wheel alignment to set things straight? Tires are Passenger Tires size 195/60/R15. Thanks for your help guys. Peace !!!

It's a little unclear what you are asking, but here goes:

1) You need to fix your alignment. You've already agreed that is what needs to be done.

2) 4 identical tires are the best combination. Identical means same size, make, model, and state of wear. The further away from that you are, the more problems you are likely to encounter.

At the very least you should have identical tires on the same axle - and the best tires should be on the rear.

Here's where I think you are going to encounter problems.

When the vehicle gets aligned, it's a static, geometric alignment. The tires have dynamic properties and one of them is conicity (root word: cone). It is likely used tires are going to have some conicity issues and you may wind up chasing a pull issue that seems immune to solving.

If you have the resources, I suggest you get 4 new tires, and get the vehicle alignment at the same place you get the tires. Be sure to tell them that there might be accident damage and they should check for it.

The intended result is that IF there is a problem, the tire/alignment shop can not avoid responsibility if the vehicle pulls.

definitely alignment and used tire. otherwise your new tires will be worn in no time.

Can you get the gang banger to pay for it? or file for an insurance claim?
