rechecking oil filter tightness 24hrs later.

Is it going to cause any problems if I go back and double check to see if my oil filter is on tight enough after driving around for a day. It's not leaking or anything I just think it could probably be a little tighter than when I put it on yesterday. My hands kept slipping on the filter and I am having second thoughts now if the oil filter was actually turning after the gasket made contact. I just don't want it to loosen up and cause me to lose my oil when im driving down the road.

Agree, check it if it makes you feel better. Installing oil filters hand tight is all that is needed, if your hands are dry when you do it.

Don't reach up there and grab a hot filter though.

The oil filter on my exmark lawn mower likes to loosen up after you change the oil so I usually have to go back and tighten it up more after it runs for an hour or two. But every other thing I have always seems to have the filter on tighter than what I put on originally. Must be the filter tightening genie comes along during the night and gives it one last good tug.

IMO the installation specs are well established, and proven by statistically significant-enough basis that it isnt a big concern.

I like to take a mental note of where I feel contact, so it is easy to mark how far I need to turn it. Sometimes it is tough in small places with greasy hands. It does not hurt to check, but IMO if you are close, you are good.

I hand tighten to the point where it feels good and snug. Then start up and idle a couple minutes to leak check. After that I consider it good for the next 10k until its due to be changed. That said, if you feel compelled to recheck it, no harm done. Peace of mind is a good thing in all matters oil related.

just dont over tighten the filter where you end up having to impale it with a screwdriver to remove it.
