Pentius UFXL PLXL7317 O-Ring gasket failure.

The O-Ring gasket on my oil filter failed nearly 4 months and 3000 miles since my last oil change. I avoided disaster as this occurred in my driveway on a cold start while idling. This Pentius UFXL was first filter from a case I had just bought. As you can imagine I'm a little gun shy from using them going forward. Any suggestions on why the gasket would fail after 3000 miles and 4 months? There were no signs of oil leakage prior to the failure. (note - it was not double gasketed)

Why are you hauling the vehicle off for an oil filter gasket failure?

I've got a case of these same filters. I don't understand how a trapped gasket can fail unless the filter wasn't snuggly tightened. Please provide more details of this incident.

Wow. I have used the 6607 variant of this filter (basically the same filter, just a tad shorter.) Never an issue. Would love to see the filter when you get it back.

I've had this happen once and only once with a K&N.
What caused the base gasket failure?
No idea, but it was strictly a one-time thing and I think this will be true in the case of your Pentius filters as well.
I too was lucky to have caught the leak before any damage was done, but mine had a much slower leak rate while yours looks like a blowout.

Basically it was because of my haste, it was New Years eve and I had a full schedule. I had intentions of climbing under to inspect, but roadside assistance arrived within 40 min. Incorrectly I was leaning towards an oil line failure. I knew oil filter failure was a possibility, but being it was 4-months & 3000 miles into the OCI and no signs of oil leakage it seemed less likely to me.

Nether do I... as stated this occurred at least half way through a OCI. I'm pretty meticulous with maintenance and have been doing my own oil changes years.

You're sure it wasn't a double-gasket situation? I find that more likely than an outright gasket failure on a properly installed oil filter.

NVM, I didn't initially catch that it happened after 3000 miles.

I have a few Pentius filters (including 7317’s) in my stash. They were all made in Souh Korea. Quality seems very good on Whip City’s video. Are they still made in South Korea?

What grade of oil? Maybe it was smart to tow, I know on certain years of Toyotas with the 3.5 engine the factory rubber oil cooler lines could rupture. They replace them with corrugated metal lines. If under warranty you never know.

HPL 5w-30 Premium +. i got the warning light, shut down the engine and popped the hood. Within seconds I look down and my shoes were bathed in motor oil. it appeared the whole sump full of oil was drained onto my driveway. Right or wrong I was fearing the worst and at that moment getting it towed to the dealership seemed like the best course of action.
