Rear disc brakes or drums?

drum brakes!?? meh

I owned multiple cars with drum brakes, while mine were braking and I got a good use of it over time (I would adjust them often when needed) I was never totally happy with its function over the discs. when was a time to replace them, it was generally a painful experience and I always needed another person to help me to put them on; so very inconvenient to replace/service them on your own

Whats the price difference? I rather have the higher trim not only for the disc brakes but other options.

140 bw for the gls with disc, 130 bw with drums lol, so 20$ a month for discs

I have drums on the back of mine. While I havent touched them even once, still good at 155k miles.. but I do agree they do not look nice with nice rims and can get rusty. I would opt for discs I think for both ease of replacing and braking power. Although the other method of thought is.. only replacing fronts is cheap and drums rarely need replacing.. so less work. Guess it depends what is more important to you. Better braking performance or less maintenance. I never minded having rear drums, I just sand them with a wire brush, prime them and give a coat of paint when it looks bad. primer and some high temp paint doesnt hurt.. even if you do the lazy way, a light sanding and spray a couple coats of high temp paint, they look better.

What other options do you get with the GLS over the GL?

Like everyone else, I've had both, as well as all drums all around. I prefer the pedal feel of boosted disc brakes.

Even some of the old caliper that have a mechanical park brake incorporated in them could be a PITA once they got a few years on them.

Drum brakes are real easy to service, when I first started trade school in 1971 disc brakes even up front were rare on cars we got to work on. Parking brake shoes in the little drum on disc brakes can be a bit of a nuisance but not difficult.

Maybe 30-40 years ago.

Esp and drums don't mix...

30 or 40 years ago what? What are you talking about some brand new cars have rear drums.

I have a 2008 and 2010 Honda Civic. One has drums in the rear, the other has disks. I don't feel any difference in braking power between the two.

It has been my experience that rear drums will last 150-200k+ miles before needing new shoes. While they are harder to work with you don't have to replace the pads/shoes nearly as often. Plus drums don't warp like disks do.

Drums like get rusty over time but so will calipers. It is very easy to take the drum off and paint it. Easier than painting a caliper. Also, if you will up north the drums will be more reliable against the salt.

No way I would pay $20/month for rear disks. The drums will work just fine. Nobody on the roads cares one bit if you have drums or disks!

Looks like nicer body pieces, adaptive cruise control (this alone IMO is worth it), Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist System, leather seats, etc... seems to be the difference between the top of the line and middle.

Rear discs always seem to be problematic here in the rust belt. Drums never really do much, but they never really do much forever with little maintenance.

Nicely said.

I have experienced the same in the southeast. Best I can figure that rear discs don't get used as much, and they just start dragging, and need to be serviced. Have two cars that do this now. Old pickup of mine has drums rear, and no problems out of them.

I have a 2017 Elantra with drum brakes in the rear. I don't notice any difference in braking performance over my other vehicle with 4 wheel disk brakes, and I have never had any complaints with them driving in town or through the mountains (which I just recently did on our trip up through the Rockies). I don't care much about the looks, so that might skew my opinion. If all else is equal, I wouldn't pay extra for rear disk brakes.

Come to think about it... I have had to replace quite a few rear disk components in the 150-200k mileage range on a variety of cars.

The brakes on my ECHO (my first car with drums) are original and have been maintenance free for well over 200k.

"Performance" and "pedal feel" are completely non-issues for these economy cars.

Disc brakes are MUCH easier to work on!!!!!! Hyundai seems to have cheapened the Elantra, as the previous gen came with 4-wheel discs standard even on the base model.

Will you be getting Krown done to your new car?

Undercoating? Maybe, Ill see what the dealer recommend, but def will

The adaptive cruise control alone is worth the difference to me. Where I live you can't really use regular cruise control. But my Q50s has it and man I love it. Less stress and can just turn it on even in heavy traffic and not have to hit the brake and reset all the time.
