Color is a very, very poor indicator for positive material identification (PMI), especially for elastomers. I've known of some people who tried this in elastomers for scuba diving regulators and tanks, there were some incidents when using hyperoxic (>21% O2) mixtures. Here's the links from Purolator's web site. PureOne http://www.purolatorautofilters.net/products/oil_filters/Pages/pureoneoilfilters.aspx Purolator Synthetic (note the "Premium" gasket, whatever that means). http://www.purolatorautofilters.net/products/oil_filters/Pages/SyntheticOilFilters.aspx Purolator (all other makes I guess) http://www.purolatorautofilters.net/products/oil_filters/Pages/purolatoroilfilters.aspx You'll see something about the 'internally lubricated nitrile gasket' on Fram's web site as well, but there's no sense in posting a bunch more links here.

I would never trust a used base gasket on a spin-on filter. Same reason many people say not to remove and drain a spin-on if you plan to use it for 2 x OCIs. The base gaskets compress and flatten out, and may get hard with use. Seems the o-rings used with cartridge filters can be reused with more confidence than reusing a base gasket on a spin-on.

Did you look further in the store? Bet they were selling the gaskets for $2.00 each.

No, but interestingly enough, all of the boxed filters (approximately 20) that were in very good shape are gone now. I stopped in on the way home from work last night, and the only ones left on the shelf were a handful that were dented. Keep in mind, these filters had been sitting on that shelf for about 6 months. Coincidence? Draw your own conclusions.
