I had a clean/recharge kit left from my true/flow foam air filter. My other car has a panel k&n it came clean fine with the true/flow kit but the oil doesn't have the red dye like k&n's do. My question is the oil the same minus the color or would the cotton k&n require different oil than the foam true/flow. The true/flows are naturally red foam where as the k&n's are pretty much white when clean.

For absolutely no other reason than giving KN the benefit of the doubt when they say only use their recharge kit for their filters.
I have never seen a VOA on their oil to compare to others. One may suspect they are all the same. However they (oils and cleaners) may be specifically made for the fiber and consistency of a particular brand. And at the end of the day your talking what....$8-$9 bucks to be sure and optimize the filter? I say go with the recommended brand of recharge kit for a specific brand of filter.

Yeah I would use whatever they say to use for re-oiling the filter. You may void the warranty if you use other non recommended oils. K&N uses red dye so when you re-oil you can see where you oiled on the cotton. Thats useful so you don't over oil the thing. Can't really say if the oils are the same since its probably some secret.
