Raybestos - Pads - Rotors

Cheap pads produce usually noise, squeal, ate up rotors. You get what you pay for usually.I have no issues with paying $30 to $50 bucks for Ac Delco or Mopar Value line or Nissan Value line type pads.I WILL NOT buy Auto parts over the counter pads I don't care HOW they are GRADED or Indexed etc.

btw on your 3, make sure the aftermarket pads use the updated backing system that the Mazda OEM pads use. they look substantially different from the original ones.

Cheap pads and new rotors produce great stopping.

Cheap pads are usually the organic type. Even with a new rotor they'll fade fast if you get them hot.

I much rather have a pad that bites better when hot and is only ok when cold. Most brakes don't stay cold for long, but stay hot for a good while.

It depends on the manufacturer, my new Ranger has NAO pads on it from Ford, most of the aftermarket list ceramic pads as the replacement. Alot of trucks still come from the factory with semi-met's on them. I'll second what another poster said, I wouldn't take a set of OEM pads for a Ford, Nissan or Honda. They just don't hold up.

OEM pads are not always the best pads.
a lot of them are lower quality ceramics which are to soft, as to provide less dust and brake squeal, which is one of the #1 warranty issues. as for braking power the ceramic won't handle the heat as well as a metallic.
some aftermarket manufacturers try to balance things out, and it sometimes backfires on them. I sell Raybestos pads, and I won't use them on my own car.
I prefer the Monroe Friction pads, which have 40% less glues & resins in the material, they are positive molded and pressed to the backing plate of the pad. There is no break in required as with other pads.
What really helps is a high temp synthetic based brake fluid, 550degrees and higher, Wilwood is my favorite. You will notice a difference in braking.
I've seen my wife and her family eat through OEM pads from mitsubishi, toyota and nissan. When I replaced them with a quality aftermarket pad, my wife wasn't able to eat through in 14 months, she's now onto her 3rd year, as are my in laws, which have doubled the longetivity. And they haven't stopped driving like maniac's!

I put a set of Raybestos Advanced Technology pads and rotors on my Ford Escape 24K ago. I like 'em - they perform just like the almost excellent OEM Ferodos. I say "almost" because the stock Ferodos threw a ridiculous amount of black dust and the Raybestos AT pads simply do not! I choose to use dust shields with the Ferodos because they were cheaper then new pads. Most folks on the Esacpe forum just threw out the stockers and installed Raybestos AT and were VERY happy afterwards.

hounddog,
I've found that most users of high performance aftermarket pads have problems because they skip two important steps:
1) Rotor prep - Wash, dry, then properely sand the rotors (or cut with a bi-directional finish), wash and dry again.
2) Bed the new pads in properely.

As for stock pads, examine the economics behind them - they're built to a price point which means they simply don't compare to premium aftermarket pads. If premuim aftermarket pads didn't work they wouldn't sell and they are more popular then ever.

My favorite street pad? Hawk HPS!

I've had very good experiences with Raybestos' premium line of brake components, but I think they were bought out in recent years and things may not still be the same.

IMO raybestos is consistently the best i have ever used. hit or miss with other brands i have tried...and i mean others don;t last of have TONS of dust. raybestos is my favorite. Carquest pads used to be made by raybestos. the only problem has been that fewer parts stores in my area carry them...so i usually order them from rockauto. the ceramic ones last forever and have low dust, but some people argue they do not bite as hard. i love them though.

the raybestos blue box rotors (PG) are made in China, but with U.S. materials. China is simply the laborer.
the raybestos Advanced rotors are suppsoedly made in the USA, however, I can't tell the difference except the hat on the rotor is painted black, oh.. and are guarenteed to not needed to be turned.

Eric,

My last set (winter,'09) of Raybestos Advanced Technology rotors were made in China. Ironically, appearance wise, they had a much better finish than the last set I bought that were made in North America.
