My mother drives a 2006 Escape with the 3.0 V6 in it. The manual calls for 5w-20 oil, but I have a stash of Motorcraft 5w30 laying around... I'm assuming that it would be OK to run the 30 weight for a 5,000-6,000 mile run?
As long as there is no specific reason for the 5W-20 the 5w30 would be ok. I doubt there is a specific reason in your application other than Ford spec'ing it to help meet CAFE standards and get the best MPG they can. Ford specs a lot of 5W-20 oil in their vehicles. Even the 5.4L V8 Super Duty trucks spec 5W-20. Just a drop in MPG as another poster mentions would be the only negative side effect I can think of.
Just a note. Some vehicles however actually need specific weights to operate properly. A perfect example would be the later model( 06+ )Dodge 5.7L HEMI w/ MDS. That engine MUST have the 20 weight for the MDS to work properly. Again, I doubt your application HAS to have 5W-20 or something won't work properly.
