I bought a Kia Forte LX 6spd I purchased after trading in my 04 Chevy Colorado Crew cab. It has the 2.0L NA theta 2 engine which is surprisingly peppy. I am abiding by the manual on what to do to break it in, but am weary of leaving the FF in for 5k miles. I was thinking about changing it at 1k to Pennzoil Conventional 5w20. After running that for 3k I was thinking about running Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 for 7.5K mi OCI's.

I also read about the TSB Kia came out with about oil filters on here, what is the true consensus of that?

Does your car use a traditional can filter or just an element?

My 2007 Sonata uses the traditional spin-on filter. I actually did have the knocking issue they warn about. It happened with a Champion Labs made STP filter from Autozone. I had read the TSB, but the knocking was so loud that I was sure the engine had a bad bearing. I replaced the filter and it never came back.

I've never used dealer filters before buying this car, but for this one, I'll probably stick to the OE filters. You can get them on ebay by the case for a good deal.

The factory filter is pretty good, too. It has a thick can and a silicone ADV.

sounds like a good plan, your thinking. the tsb that hyundai came out with concerning oil filters that gets alot of play was an older motor/filters. i don't know the specific kia one. many kia/hyundai motors/filters are identical. the factory filter is pretty good, especially given the cost. i've used many aftermarket good/best filters on a variety of the theta II 2.4 and 2.0T motors w/ good effect - no problems. i'd break it in motoman style (hard) but that's just me and my NSHO.

If you want your 10/100 engine/powertrain warranty to be worth the paper it's printed on, stick with Kia filters! Or else! Sorry if I sound a little strong, but Hyundai/Kia will reject warranty claims on engines due to oil-related damage due to non-approved (as in not their) filters.

I would not change the FF too early. FFs usually has assembly lube and possibly extra anti-scuff additives to help with the break-in. You have a good oil filter to protect the engine again any wear causing material. Just follow the Engineers recommendations. I am also a believer in using the OEM oil filters, for at least the first several oil changes just in case there is some early issues. Ed

There have been a few uoa with FF levels of over 500ppm moly. I'd leave it in for a little while.

Over on the Hyundai Veloster forum, a used oil analysis at 2,246 miles on the 5W-20 FF (Quaker State...reported syn by a Hyundai rep) in the V's 1.6 Gamma engine turned in 920 ppm of moly, likely boosted by engine assembly lubricants used by Kia/Hyundai.

Re: Kia/Hyundai OEM filters...made my Mobis, a Hyundai Motors affiliate, built like a tank to exacting standards and specs, reasonably priced at ~%6.00, very popular with knowledgeable DIY owners.

yeah be careful change the oil every 3750 or 6 months (im pretty sure that is hat it says)
Hyundai/Kia are very "cute" when it comes to warrantee issues

I like the idea, but second the comments about filters, etc., as you dont want them to rip you off.

Unfortunately there have been some reports of counterfeit Kia/Hyundai oil filters selling in the aftermarket.

To assist in identifying OEM Hyundai filters and prevent contamination, the filters have a shrink-wrapped face on the screw end with Hyundai logos imprinted all over the wrap. Beware the faux filters.

Used to own a 2011 Hyundai Tucson IX.
Initially in the first scheduled maintenance (1000KM) i bought my own oil and brought it to the dealer so they did the maintenance.

After the first maintenance, in order to keep my "warranty" i had to do a scheduled maintenance every 5000KM (YES, Kilometers not Miles) and they forced me to buy the oil from the stealership or i would void the warranty. I had no problem with it since any regular oil (Dino Shell or Castrol GTX) would do fine because it was every 5000KM but the problem is that they were charging me more than double of what it costs buying it on my own . . . [censored] scammers.

I think some service departments try yo use scare tactics. The owners manual says that maintenance records needed to be kept. I like doing my own work so a binder will be kept on all maintenance done including receipts for the day maintenance was conducted.

Yep, stealership. The dealership doesn't have any power to void the warranty, since they don't actually offer the warranty in the first place. I would have asked for that in writing and sent it up the line.

Good point. And, why would the dealer care if they had to perform some warranty work on your car; they get reimbursed for it. The answer lies in the fact that anticipated profits on the service of your car exceed any margins that the dealer can expect from warranty repairs. It's all a bean-counter's game...and the dealer lied.

My wife drives a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe and I changed the FF at 3K miles. It is a good Idea to wait until 3K because of all the additives that are in the FF. Going with PP is fine and that is what I now use in the Santa Fe. I do 5K oci's.... I also use Hyundai oil filters, which are very high quality.
