Question for those who reuse oil filters

A filter goes into bypass when used too long, not when used for multiple OCI. Some filters are rated for 20K, which can be (2) (3) or (4) oil changes.

My last (2) OC on my prius were 12K and 10K. (1) Fram Ultra was used for the both OC. I did not empty it out.
Exactly. But I think what @partspro was getting at is the longer you push a filter, the more likely it will reach the "used too long" phase, and you wouldn't know it went into bypass mode if it had. (correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not aware of any early warning system that let's you know when this happens.)

I'd personally struggle with keeping a filter on for 20k, even if it is rated for 20k. My personal comfort level is around 10k for a 20k rated filter.

That's why you oil the gasket before installing.;)
Look at the gasket on a filter that's been on the engine for quite a while compared to a new gasket. The used filter's gasket will be permanently compressed by quite a bit, so there is no more "spring" in the gasket, which could potentially cause sealing issues if removed and reinstalled.

Never had that problem. Maybe on a 10 year old filter where the rubber has turned to hard plastic, but not one that's a few years old. You just tighten it a quarter turn more.

I came here to see the responses. I want most the oil out, I use syn oil therefore use it for 7500k and always change the filter, even when using fram ultra and mobil 1 filters, they get changed.

Never may not last forever. It's simply not worth removing an oil filter to try and drain the oil out of it to then re-use it. Leaving 8~12 oz of oil in an oiling system that takes 5-8 qts of oil isn't going to hurt anything, especially if the oil is changed at a normal interval.

Exactly how do you try to drain the filter? Probably spend more time and effort tying to drain and reuse a filter than it would take to put new filter on, and certanly way more time and mess then just leaving the filter on undisturbed if you were using it for another OCI.

Yep, either continue to use it or replace it. The middle ground of trying to get every last drop out of the engine is an exercise in futility. Even when draining the oil and replacing the filter, there's often a fair amount of old oil left in the system. Ex: my oil filter holds .4 (4/10) quart but the engine retains 1.4 quarts when doing a complete change with the filter. YMMV, but you get the picture, I'm sure.

Apparently this has been a popular subject here on Bitog with little resolution. Some of the threads specifically address removing and reinstalling the filters, one thread even discusses cleaning out the filter before reuse:

Well kschachn, we can’t reach everyone.

There always seems to be one of these threads every few months.

My opinion is using a 10k filter for two 5k OCI is actually easier on it than using it for 10k because the oil has been changed halfway through and the average contamination of the oil is much lower. Fewer filters in the landfill is a good thing.
Also the oil left behind in the filter and galleries at 5,000 miles still has more life in it than some who are running 10,000 mile OCI's. Its just not a problem and I can avoid crawling underneath the car to get the filter that day. Its always just easier to drain the oil and put the plug back in.

On all three of my cars, I have to crawl under the car to drain the oil anyway. But I'm definitely considering leaving the filter on for two OCIs for all of them. Funny, all three of my cars (Infiniti M45, Honda CR-V, Honda Civic) use the same 7317 filter. Apologies to those who have posted that this question has been asked frequently before. But the fact that there have been nearly 3 pages of posts means it's still a relevant question to ask.

If I use a cheaper filter, I'll change it with every OCI. Lately I have been using better filters (Ultra, Purolator Boss) and running them for 2 OCIs. The filter stays on if used for 2 OCIs, there really isn't too much oil left in the engine and I'd be more worried about compromising the seal of the filter than the few Oz of oil left. Many manufacturers (Honda is one) specify changing the filter every other oil change. For me it feels less wasteful (less filters in a landfill), the filter is likely filtering just as good, and the engine also won't need to prime itself for a few seconds while it fills the filter.

The only con I can see is that sometimes after being on longer the filters are harder to get off.

I use the fram ultra for the wife's venza and it stays in place for 10k miles. I usually dump the oil around 5k miles and refill. I haven't seen any issues with doing it this way.
I've done this a couple of times with the F150 also, but that oil change is stupid simple and not messy. The cartridge filter on the venza is a hot mess when changing, literally.

Yes exactly. Just because the oil is used long enough that the owner or manufacturer says to change it, this does not mean the oil is suddenly bad. It is still lubricating the engine, more than likely it still has some TBN and useful additives, and the little oil left behind will not "contaminate" the new oil. There is always a safety margin built in unless you have gone far, far beyond a reasonable interval, which is another topic.
