I used to have this problem also. I found that a "band" type oil filter wrench of the proper size works best. I bought mine at Napa and it works extreemly well even on the tightest filters. The wrench looks like a thin flexable metal band about 1 1/2 to 2 inches in width and makes a full loop. You just slip it over the filter and pull the wrench "loop" tight and the filter comes right off.

I have never had a problem with an ST or any other brand I have used. As for a tool, they cost more than any specialized oil filter tool, but a pair of 16'' Channellocks does a great job on oil filters and replaces many other specialized tools. I have used mine many time when I didn't have anything else that would have worked. See more at

The Channellocks will also fit the filter on almost anything you may ever buy, except the cartridge caps on something like my Ecotec.

For those that are stuck, I take a long slotted screw driver and tap it through the oil filter, then unscrew it that way, or at least "break" it enough where you can take the rest off by hand. Most of the oil will drain out when you puncture the filter with the screwdriver.

Thanks for the recommendations.

However, in trying to take off the filter I used:
1) Cap wrench and a ratchet 2) Strap wrench 3) Channel locks, but all were unsuccesful. Even the mechanic said, that this was the hardest filter that he ever had to take off.

I'm going to take a look at other wrenches and see if they'll have enough clearance in my car.

I've recently started using the ST3593A filters after reading the comments on the board. Yesterday, I was going to just replace the filter because I am going to run Auto-Rx. However, when I went to remove the filter, I couldn't get it off. I'm sure that I oiled the filter and that I didn't tighten it too hard (hand tight+1/4 turn). So I brought it to a shop and it took them about 15 minutes to remove the filter. I just would like to know:

1. Has anyone had problems removing ST filters from their vehicle?

2. Which filter wrench do you guys use? I purchased the "J" wrench from Walmart, but it kept slipping during my attempted removal.

I use the pliers type wrench. I onle have to get it a half a turn loose before I can do the rest by hand. I feel this works best with a horizontally mounted filter.

I also use cheap latex gloves and hand tighten new filter only.

When I tightened 1/4 past with the pliers my mechanic had a hard time too.

Hope this helps.
