Just for fun I decided to try some Royal Purple in my bmw x5. Its outta warranty. I'm not an oil nurd so just wanted to try.

I read the bottle and it makes claims of increased fuel economy. I started wondering about this so I went on their web site and customer testimionials talk about 1 to 2 mpg increase. If I added 1.5 mpg to my current 15mpg I would save around $6.50 per tankful... 2.3 gallons or about 123$ over a 7500 oci hmmmmm??? If this were true every manufacturer would be using it to meet federal standards right??
What's the truth here? Is there any hard data?

To the first sentence, yes, you are an oil nurd. You're a member here, aren't you?

As to the second question, I have never seen any hard/conclusive data from any oil company that their oil will increase gas mileage.

Thanks Johnny!! When do I get the secret de-coder ring?
They shouldn't be able to make those claims without head to head bench tests with many repeats of the experiment to collect lots of data. So, you can draw a real conclusion

The "truth"? The "truth" is they got you to buy their product.

That is the hard data.

Other than that, all oils of the same weight are going to be the same for MPG (or within the "noise" of data) no matter what they are made of.

If they used the TRUTH then you'd put out of work all the marketing wizards out there.

ANY "test" that would be printed would be only IF their brand "performed" "better" than the competition.

Take care, Bill

PS: keep us informed in THIS thread all the MPG improvements you get!

The only properly controlled trial I'm aware of is the one BP commissioned. In that case, the lab (SWRI) found no improvement with Royal Purple compared to whatever Castrol product they tested. I'm pretty sure that was only with one grade, though.

Other than that, there is nothing conclusive either way -- just anecdotes.

The fact that manufacturers aren't using it doesn't really mean much IMO. There are many reasons why they might not use it even if it does improve fuel economy (e.g. it's to expensive, it can't be produced in enough volume, it won't run the OCIs, etc.).

Like Bill said, any oil in a given weight should give a similar MPG. Except for the Kendall with Liquid Titanium that the Firestone guy promises me will increase my MPG, especially with E85, because the "titanium doesn't wash away like zinc with E85, and it's better for your cat!" Ad writers are like your kids, constant attempts to drain your retirement account.

they were able to outlaw trans fats in cookies and potatoe chips.

maybe they could make petro oil companies stop making outlandish claims with independent oil tests to confirm those claims.

I know why a company wouldn't do it or release the results.

You could apply that to any company or product. Your first example has no bearing on the second.

The second is marketing. And anything coming from marketing has been proofed by the well paid corporate lawyers to ensure that its kosher and lawsuit proof. Beyond that, all is fair in marketing.

Caveat emptor.

Never seen one of those? You put the ribbon thingy around your midsection and the machine jiggles it back and forth. It's supposed to burn fat without requiring you to exercise. Not the most laughable artifact of 1950s pseudo-science, but certainly one of the most memorable.

Oh,I see how it works now. Used to see those things on comedy show`s etc.

I was given a case of RP 10w30 by my cousin who won it at some motorcycle event. Anyways I did some research on RP and remember reading that the MPG claims were done comparing another brands 20W50 to their 5W30. So it makes sense that you could gain some MPG's. They were also claiming that you did not need as heavy of a eight to get the same protection. This was a couple years ago though so im not sure what their claims are now. By the way I have the RP 10W30 in my engine now and am getting the same exact MPG's I have with every other oil I have used.
