I have been using MMO, 4 oz to each 10 gallons of gas in the tank for about 6 weeks now. It works great and gave me some very noticeable gains and improvements. My engine runs smoother and quieter, has more power andmy truck just runs a lot better and stronger with MMO in the gas. So far I have seen only a slight increase in MPG on some tanks, and no increase on a couple other tanks. I hope to get better MPG based on MMO in the gas when the weather gets warmer and we get off of winter gas.

I also added half a pint of MMO to my oil about 1000 miles ago and there was a lot of really noticeable gains from it. I added MMO to the oil primarily as a cleaning procedure but it made my engine run even smoother, run better from a cold start and it cleared up a vibration I had on hot idle.

I am still a bit hesitant to continue using MMO in the oil at every oil change and for the duration of the oci. Some say when they ran MMO for the last 500 to 1000 miles and did not add it back in the oil at the following oil change, their engine did not run as well as it did with MMO in the oil, and others say the opposite. Some say you don't need it in the oil all the time, and only need it as a cleaner the last part of your OCI. But everything I have read about MMO in the gas has been very positive. It's the best fuel additive I have ever used.

I am trying to understand MMO and how it is working in my truck. Truck runs great, it's a night and day improvement from when I didn't use MMO at all. My truck runs faster and accelerates smoother and easier on MMO too. But my question is, Is it doing that much better because the MMO in the gas tank is improving combustion due to its UCL properties and improved fuel flow? Truck starts easier now and I wonder is that only due to running MMO in the gas? If I can continue getting the same good performance and power with just MMO in the fuel, then I would feel better just using motor oil in the crankcase. I just don't know if the improvements I have experienced will continue if I stop using MMO in the oil. Most of what I read online says most guys just put MMO in the gas, not the oil unless there is some reason for it, like a noisy lifter. I wonder if my vibration at idle would come back if I didn't use MMO in the oil.

I am asking this because I have an oil change coming up in a few days and just can't make up my mind whether to keep using MMO in the oil. My truck only has a 4 quart sump and if I do use it, it will be half a qt MMO and 3.5 qts 10W30. I am hesitant to use anything but oil for the entire length of my OCI but I have to wonder whether my engine will keep running as well as it has these last 1000 miles, without MMO in the oil.

I would rather not add anything to the oil if I can help it. I wonder is there a good oil additive that can give similar results to MMO, but without having to reduce the total amount of oil in the sump to substitute the additive. Any help or info is much appreciated here.

If you have already been using MMO often, you may not need to use it in the oil as aggressively anymore. You are right about having concern on effective additive depletion with a smaller sump. How long do you go on your oil? I suggest getting a used oil analysis on your engine taken at 3,500 because of the concern of the 4qt sump. Have you taken the valve cover(s) off and looked for crud? Your signature doesn't say what you own.

Since I love gadgets and gauges, If this was a truck I was keeping forever id consider an oil cooler and filter adapter. The motorcraft fl-1a size holds more oil too. This way with the extra hose, the cooler, and the filter, you can add at least another quart of circulating oil in the system. You can also add a temp gauge to your oil to see where you stand. EDIT: put the temp gauge on NOW to see where you stand then add your cooler to get satisfaction from your work. In Florida i see no problem putting a cooler on and running open, no need for fancy thermo complexity.

You can also skip all that and run rotella 5w-40! Its a darling on here and i agree.

Years back when gas was $4+ a gallon Costco was selling their gas $0.35 cheaper versus other stations. What happen was Costco was buying fresh made gas at market price when the cost of fuel was falling. It took a good two months before the other stations caught up with price decrease because their fuel was in storage and the price of gas reflected the price of oil when it was made.

Costco sold such large volume of gas per day they had ask for a contract buying fresh made gas Aloha Petroleum agreed to Costco's needs.

Fresh 10% ethanol gas felt like it had been spiked with something. RESPONSE was great engine felt livelier. Fuel made a difference. When the economy went south and those long lines at Costco became a thing of the past Costco no longer had the contract for fresh fuel. What a difference 2-3 months old or longer who knows but gas was like night and day.

All fuels are not created equal...you may had bad batch of fuel and MMO might have helped. I've tried MMO in the fuel(after Costco no longer had fresh fuel) and after 3/4 gallon of usage I'm at 5000 miles without it. I felt some improvement the first 3 fill ups but presently without MMO I feel no difference. I may get a bad batch at fill up as it has happen before. I'll save the remaining MMO when that happens.

What's in MMO that modern oil today can't protect with MMO as an oil additive.

Jimmy9190, it sounds like you are skeptical and feel uncomfortable about adding MMO to your oil, if that is the case nothing I can say about my observations with MMO in the oil means much here, you have doubts, so I would recommend that you do not use MMO in your oil until you feel comfortable.

It's a 2001 Dodge Dakota with the 3.9 V6 and a 5 speed manual. It has almost 123,000 miles on it now. I change my oil every 3000 miles. I bought the truck at 42,000 miles and always used Valvoline conventional until about 2 years ago when I switched to Napa brand. I have 4 more qts of Napa 10W30 in my stash then I have 20 qts of Carquest brand 10W30 that I picked up on sale last month. I use Proselect and/or CQ Red filters.

From 65,000 miles up till about 85,000 I ran Maxlife 10W30 in it. I switched back to conventional because Maxlife got too expensive and my truck was a little sluggish on Maxlife and Napa HM. I haven't removed the valve covers but I can't see any crud through the oil filler hole, in fact it looks very clean.

This is my first experience with any kind of oil additive. I used to run a bottle of Regane fuel system cleaner every 5,000 miles, but have been using MMO at every fuel fill for about 6 or 7 weeks now. The truck is running so well on MMO that right now I don't see the need for Regane. I may use it once or twice a year in the future as a good strong FI cleaner.

I hate to run the MMO topic in the ground, I just am very hesitant about using MMO all the time in the oil when the engine may not need it. My truck sure does run well on MMO but I'd rather not be using less 10W30 in the sump if I can get the same good performance with MMO only in the tank and just using 10W30 in the engine.

I would recommend this.

On your OCI, at the last 1000mi, check the oil, and if its any low just top it off with MMO. Then at teh ende of OCI dump it and put fresh oil without MMO... do that until your clsoe to another oil change... maybe 2-3 of those then pause for 1-2 OCIs...

As far as gas goes, I don't see it hurt anything so I use it every other tank, 1 on, 1 off...

The stuff lubricates some of the components such as injectors and oil pump etc so its all great in that sence.

No need to use it in the oil all the time. For many years I only added MMO to the oil during the winter, other times for the last 1000 miles of an OCI. Why not just use your favorite oil, and treat the car to MMO in the oil for the winter time only. Small sump then use a pint instead of a qt. JMO

I too have a 2001 Dakota with a 3.9, but it has only 67,000 miles on the clock. This was a municipal truck for the first 8 years of it's life and accumulated lots of engine idle time and therefore, some minor sludging. The truck had some lifter noise that started at about 53k miles and continued until I added 16 ounces of MMO to the crankcase in November, 2009. The oil level was full when I added it, so I went a half quart over capacity with about 4,000 miles remaining on the OCI. After about 10 miles, the lifter noise stopped. I'll add another 16 ounces for the next OCI and run full cycle with MMO.

Next, I tried adding it to the gas and had the same result you did; smoother idle, better acceleration and fuel economy. Now I add 6 ounces to every other fillup to keep the injectors clean.

Thanks Hinterlander, that is exactly the kind of info I am looking for. Did you add 16 oz MMO to the oil when it already was full with 4 qts? I am assuming from your post that it didn't hurt anything or cause any foaming or other detrimental effect. If going half a quart over on the oil fill didn't hurt anything, then that is exactly what I will do too. I love the way my truck runs with MMO in the oil and gas, and the only reason I was hesitant about continuing to use MMO in the oil is I did not want to run too low of an amount of motor oil in the sump. It only takes 4 quarts to begin with. I know the 3.9 in the 2000 Dakota calls for 4.5 qts of oil. Maybe that one has a little larger oil pan capacity.

My truck has a bit of a lifter rattle, I can hear it on the driver's side of the engine. That's another reason I would like to keep on using MMO in the oil and like you I think a larger MMO dose in the sump would probably quiet the lifter(s) down. Plus the engine runs really quiet and smooth and starts very fast with the MMO. I just did not know how much of the benefits came from just running MMO in the gas. In other words, I wondered which is better, to run MMO in the gas or the oil, if you could only do one or the other?

There is a recent post today in the forum on the MMO website from a guy who had a used oil analysis done on his Lexus running 16% MMO in the oil. Blackstone loved it and the used oil analysis is great except that they noted a bit of reduction in the viscosity, lilkely the result of MMO in the oil. They said the viscosity reduction was slight and nothing to be worried about. If Blackstone liked this used oil analysis with the MMO, then that's good enough for me.

Thanks for the info. I had not heard from anyone who added any amount of MMO to a full oil fill. If that didn't cause you any problems then surely it will work the same for me.

Jimmy9190, I've read a lot of your posts and it seems that the MMO is doing a very good job for you...if I were you, I'd run 3 1/2 quarts of your 10w30 with a half quart of MMO for the next full OCI. MMO has lubricating qualities even though it's not a motor oil. I think your engine will be just fine with that mix. I'd also put 4 oz of MMO in the left over half quart of motor oil and use that for any needed top offs during the OCI...after that OCI was over, then decide what method to use for your circumstances based on your experience at that point ...

Yeah I agree. MMO in my oil hasn't damaged my engine or caused any problems. I think I am just being a bit over-cautious about the whole thing. I know my truck sure runs a lot better with MMO in the gas and the oil too. I wil probably just use 3.5 qts oil and the other half qt of MMO in this upcoming oil change and I am going to closely monitor the oil level. I may increase the initial shot of MMO by 2 ounces, just to help see if a slightly increased dose will help quiet my engine any further and help the lifter noise a bit more. 2 oz over won't hurt anything, but I don't want to go much over that.

In all my MMO research, I have not yet found anyone who had any engine problems at all from using MMO in their oil. There were one or two who said they didn't get the results they wanted, but my guess would be they had engine problems that MMO just can't help.

MMO is a great product and has made my truck run like new again. Thanks for the info and help here.

It's up to you, both ways work well.

If you have fears of whole OCI's, check out the MMO used oil analysis, there's a handful of them now. They all look real good.

MMO is mainly mineral spirits with some kerosene and napthenic hydrocarbons. I'm not exactly sure how this benefits engine oil or gasoline, but I don't think minute amounts will hurt anything.
