Purolator Synthetic PSL14459 Torn ADBV!

This was in use for around 5,000 miles on my 1995 Acura Integra LS that I sold earlier this year. This filter sat in the garage all winter. The oil used was Havoline Synthetic 5w30 (API SM rated c. 2006). There were some below freezing temperatures during this OCI. No torn pleats, just a bit wavy. The filter was still full of oil so the ADBV was working fine and still pliable, but I found a tear in the ADBV when I looked at it more closely. This was not caused by my cutter and it appears to have been there during the run... I'm just glad it did not compromise the seal and it didn't cause any dry starts that I could tell.

Seams to be the new puro problem seen a few torn adbv lately. Sad this is a high end filter with a high end price. I belive it to be the first puro syn failure. Glad I wrote them off long ago.

Yep, I saw a messed up Puro synthetic at K Mart, the ADBV was all curled up inside the filter.

Hopefully this was just a fluke/a rare manufacturing defect because the Purolator Synthetic filter is supposed to be a good filter .... well, it should be anyway since it has wire-backed synthetic media, good efficiency, and a silicone ADBV. But nothing surprises me anymore in this life.

So the media is not wire-backed in a Purolator Synthetic (e.g. the wavy media suggests that it is not)? These filters cost too much for it not to be wire-backed...

They probably quit while they were ahead on wire backing it since the wire would probably tear next sending the wire up the oil passages.

They can't do anything right.

I wondered the same thing, given those wavy pleats. According to their website, they have "wire-backed pleat supports"

I think people sent torn filters and things like that and they were basically sent back an e-mail describing what was in the package and basically something to the effect of "tough noogies since you cut the filter open we can't do anything" despite the fact that you'd have to cut the filter open to see these. I guess they want us to send them unopened filters for no reason and trust them on their word. Yeah no thanks.

They're scumbags, they'll never own up to their junk filters since that means they'd have to admit they have issues like this and if they did they'd have to do something about all of the "damage" that's been caused. You know the same damage they scream about on their website to get you to buy their filters. Stuff like having filters that bypass or drain oil will destroy your bearings.

Stay away from Purolater their filters seem to be engineered to tear... What other explanation is there? It's a shame they used to make good filters.

Just use the box. Lol just kidding. I dunno if the tearing thing is really what its being made out to be or if its a boogy man effect. Or the scribes and Pharisees are just akin to throw their stones lol.i do have several p classics and p 1s that I got at Kmart a while back dated 2008 and 2009. One of the p1 is 2012
gotem all for pennies almost. Did the boogy man tearing issues apply in 08 09 or 12? I'm trying to decided if I wanna use em or just keep for my kids kids kids for antique .

I'd happily use the ones from 08 and 09 as I have many times and cut open with great results. I'd pass on the one from 2012 as I believe they were already having issues by that point.

The media on the Purolator Synthetic filter is wire-backed (it has been on the ones I have used anyway), but I have also wondered why the media doesn't look better. For one thing, I believe the media is thinner than that of the FRAM Ultra, which has two layers. Anyway, the torn ADBV is disappointing to see, and I noticed that a few torn ADBVs have popped up on here recently, this being the first one on a Puro Synthetic filter.
