Apparently, after 12,399 miles, even the mighty orange can begins to fade. This oil change got away from me, what with 6 day work weeks, rain, brain surgery and whatnot. But an oil filter doesn't care about your excuses. This is actually an HM2, which has the same filter element as a PH2.

The second pleat to the right of the seam is torn at the base. This is more of an "incipient" tear, as it wasn't separated until I pushed it with my finger.

The pleat to the left of the seam is torn at the base. Also, the fifth pleat to the left of the seam is torn.

Same angle, different lighting.

Back side looks fine.

IMO, this filter is just worn out. I'd consider it a 5,000-6,000 mile filter, and I ran it for more than twice that. I bought some of these when Rock Auto was blowing them out cheap, and the others that I cut open at more reasonable OCI's didn't have any tears or defects that I could see.

Oh yeah, ADBV was still pliable. Any damage you see to the end caps was done by me.

Wide pleats, much like I've seen in PH16 & PH8A orange cans, were your undoing here. If they had crammed another nickel's worth of media in there, it would have been fine!

The uneven wide wavy pleats look like garbage but I don't see an actual tear. I agree that a nickel's (or dime's) worth more of filter material would go a long way to improve the quality.

+1 - OP should have chosen a filter that was rated for the OC.

I think the never use a cheap filter does not have a place here. This filter is recommended for a 5k interval not 12. I run my OCI's super short..8000km or less and I wouldnt hesitate to use it. I do however have a preference to use OEM since the quality is better as is the price.

Agree with 901....but 2015 PSD, OP mentioned brain surgery so he gets a pass on letting maintenance go long!!!

Stelth, welcome back glad you are doing better.

+1 I haven't seen even a "cheap" Puro built to that disgustingly low standard. Fram ought to quit making the POS and those who use them ought to remember "Engines are CHEAP, filters are EXPENSIVE".

That just goes to show you that even the lower class filters have life well past their rating. A nice plug for the Orange can filters. They last. Now let's subject another brand $3-$4 filter to a 10K run and see how it looks.

OP said: " even the mighty orange can begins to fade"

The Orange can was *never ever* regarded as mighty. It is referred to as the orange can of death.
