Purolator Pureone Filter Media Failure

I traded my 05 Outback 2.5i with 120K miles for an 03 Civic LX with 80K miles. Both cars use the same filter. I just changed the oil and filter (Pulolator Classic) in the Civic and cut open the Fram made Honda OEM filter. It looked totally fine. I then cut open a used Pureone filter from the Subaru and.......torn filter media! The filter was run 5000 miles: 70% highway / 30% city.

I think that Purolator has a problem and if they don't fix it soon it will affect their bottom line. I have sworn off Purolators (which used to be my favorite filter) until they correct their problem (and let us know they corrected it).
 
I'm going to send these pictures to them and see what happens. No need for a bypass valve when there's a tear the size of the one I found.
 
Nov,05 2012 build date. And that is the typical "blowout" we've been seeing. Metal crimped seam, pleats on either side of the crimp wider than the rest, and its those wide pleats where the tears occur, down near the end cap
 
Wow....I have to wonder what percentage of PuroLeaker users are having failures. Anyone who writes this off as insignificant is just plain ignorant.

I will NEVER use another PuroLeaker product. Their company obviously could care less about this MAJOR issue!

The two things I asked them are:

1. What happens to the efficiency rating when there's a hole in the filter media?

2. What quality and durability solutions have they or are they planning to implement?

At the bottom of the PureONE webpage it says:
"Purolator PureONE oil filters should be replaced every 3,000 miles or 3 months depending on the driving conditions - or unless otherwise specified by the vehicle's manufacturer."

My Subaru called for a 6,000 miles filter change and my Honda calls for a 20,000 mile filter change! If you are running Purolator filters, I'd stick with their 3000 mile recommendation.
 
yup. First it was the consistent bashing of fram orange can of death, and then the E-core bashing, next came the whipping boy in da hood---purolator.

What comes next? Wix? Hastings?

When will Mahle or Bosch be the next whipping boy in town?

I'd love to see their reply. Thanks for posting the pictures it makes me feel even better getting rid of the few remaining Purolator filters I had. I'm done with Purolator for now.

I think the Fram and E-core were undeserved bashings....this however, is deserved.

If/when they turn out filters like Purolator is they probably will have the same fate.
 
The only filters i would use now are Mobil 1 , Fram Ultra, Fram Tough Guard, Royal Purple, regular Wix, or Ac Delco non e-cores. I mostly go by price/mileage/performance ratio so i don't see myself buying many of my hot list unless on clearance.

I will probably never use anything besides Fram Ultra since i will run them for 15,000 miles and get them for about $6 on amazon and now i have 3 ultras for my Buick, and 1 for my Taurus, which i never drive, should last the life of the vehicle on that one. I am running my last stashed FL400s until i get around to changing the oil.

To the OP: I suggest you try a Fram Ultra too!

Many cartridge filter has no core at all, it slides on the holder with similar design to E-core. E-core wasn't the problem, the problem was the filter media, it was either too weak and defective.

With BITOG members being only a small slice of the actual amount sold it really does make me wonder just how many defects there are out in the wild.

For all the problems you see with filters like the Purolator and even many others that have less issues i have never seen a media tear or wave in a Fram Ultra spin on filter. The only failures i've ever seen from Ultras were the Ecotech cartridge filter that had a pin hole in it and a Fram spin on that seemed to have been dropped and the element popped loose inside the canister.

The ecotech thrashes on everyting including oem filters which i have seen first hand, so it's a rare exception.

Either way its an odds game for me and you want something with the best odds.

I forgot to add i would use Amsoil filters too, which are over 98% efficient and high capacity but probably too expensive for my applications.
