For roughly the same money, I can get either a PureOne or a Toyota OEM for my 97 4 cyl Camry. Because of the dubious sludge history for this engine, the car gets a 5K OCI using Mobil 1 High Mileage. So which should I use or does it even matter?

Over on Lexus forums, folks were quite unhappy with Thailand made Toyota filters compared to Japan made. Folks here have confirmed they have noticeably poorer filtration than the competition even though they are generally respected for good build quality.
So I would say that as long as flow restriction isn't a big issue with the Pure One compared to Toyota, then go with the Pure One.

I switched from the Toyota (Made in Thailand) Denso filters to the PureOne after seeing river_rat's bench testing and also this graph. It's a nicely made filter, but both indicated that they don't filter that great.

It's pretty much the standard particle size that people compare filters with. To many 20 micron particles can increase motor wear. Yeah, it's small ... but not small enough.
If you don't care about 20 micron particles, then just get a screen mesh filter.

Wow, that's pretty compelling evidence. I can get the Pureone for a shade over $6; the dealer wants $4.89 for the OEM. The filtration test for the OEM is kind of scary.

I'd go purolator and not look back.
toyota oem can be made by anybody at anytime. at least with a Purolator, you know what you're consistantly going to get.
I have Mobil 1 5w30 running upwards of 11k on my sister in laws sludger toyota, the motor's relatively clean and by 10k and about a half quart low. Pretty decent OCI.. then again, this car is mainly on the freeway so that might help.. but I'd like to think the Mobil 1 is doing its job.

I use(d) the OEM Toyota filter on my sister's '08 RAV4 while it was under warranty, not because I felt it was a superior filter, but because it's not my car and I didn't want there to be any possibility of a coverage issue should there be an oil-related problem with this vehicle. I always use, and recommend friends to use, OEM parts on vehicles under warranty...after that, I have my list of favourites...
