PureOne Flimsy Case - Done with them

I've been using a lot of PureOne filters over these past several years, but I'm done buying them for a mundane reason: The case seems to be made of the weakest steel of any major brand. Even the highly similar Bosch Premium filter seems to have a stouter can.

On at least one of my vehicles, the filter is hard to get at. With the PureOne, it is very easy to crush the can with my strap style wrench instead of the filter turning. I have to be very careful to use the wrench at one end or the other of the can, never in the middle.

I don't need the extra hassle and aggravation, especially when so many other filters don't have this weakness.

I like th P1 for the grip and bang for the buck. Im using MC filters now since my vehicles are under warranty. Are you going to starts using the Bosch filters? Pretty much the same thing just different can.

The P1 may have a thin can.
I've never had a problem with them.
Unless you put the filter on too tightly, getting it off shouldn't be an issue if the thing is removed on some reasonable interval.
Only oil filters I've ever found to be troublesome to remove were the OEM ones (way too tight) or those that had been left in service way beyond any reasonable interval.

I've cut open both PureONE PL14610 and Bosch 3323 filters which are the same size. There was no noticeable difference in the can strength. Both were equally flimsy/strong.

I've used plenty, and have yet to crush one, either putting it on nor taking it off. How much are you tightening after gasket contact, and are you oiling the gasket first?

I worked in a brake and muffler shop for 6 years. Probably did 5-6 OCs a day. Never crushed a filter with a strap wrench. Apparently the OP has the grip strength of Hercules.

Please expand on your post. I always oil the gasket and tighten the filter with my hands, never a wrench. But almost always need to use a wrench to get the filter off. I am not sure one can really over tighten with your bare hands. At least not me.

i like oil flow so i stay away from p1
i can see the difference in my oil gauge i will use the white classic unless that got real thin also

PureONEs do seem to have flimsy cans. I don't care about smooshing them when I take them off, but I accidentally dented the PL14612 that was on my Bug when I put it on. It was just a small dent but it kind of put me off of them.

I've settled on the Napa Platinums unless I see proof that they suck horribly. AMAZING construction and they should easily do two OCIs, so the price works out to about the same as, or sometimes a little less than, a Gold.

Dad's gone with standard Wix/Napa Gold/Carquest Blue/etc.

Wix are the same price point as a PureONE, have a silicone adbv, glass-enhanced media, much stouter construction, and the beta ratios for the sizes he would use show 95% efficiency @ 20 microns. Not as good as a PureONE but plenty good enough.

PureONEs flow fine, see this thread.

I use Pureone oil filters on all my cars 5 in all, but my wife's 2008 PT Cruiser for some reason, when it come's time for and oil change on her car (3000 miles because of her stop and go driving) that filter on her car will not come off by hand like all my other cars, I have to use and oil filters wrench. And yes in that case the Pureone filters case is way to Flimsy. Her car gets WIX.

My Toyota Corolla was like that: oil the o-ring, install the filter by hand, all that. But boy, when it was time for the filter to come off...I durn near crushed a PureOne filter myself trying to get it to come off. That car just GLUED that oil filter on every time. It wasn't brand specific, but it was definitely car specific. None of my other vehicles have ever been that way.

How many turns beyond first contact of the base gasket are you guys tightening the filter?

I tighten the PureOnes by hand slightly less than 3/4 turn ... maybe closer to 2/3 turn. They are a little tight when removed, but I can always get them off by hand.

If people are tightening them to 1 full turn, then I can see where they would be pretty hard to remove.

3/4 of a turn like all my cars, but her PT Cruiser just for some reason does not like Purolator at all. But I have no problem with wix/napa gold on her car.
But I do not think its the filter because not one of my other cars have any problems with Pureone filters.
