I like Magnatec and use all weights of it. But I am an oil slut so I get around.
The 5w20 Mag in my 2L Mitsu was fine. I run it out to 10K with a Fram Ultra- love the color too- yeah I know. But I used up some Total Quartz Future 9000 in the 0w20 flavor on the same motor and it was much quieter and smoother.
That said when the Total gets about 2k on it, it goes varnish color for which I really don't like. But being anal aside
I'll keep using it- really slick stuff.

When I picked up my step father's Avalon I noted it running a bit noisier than what I had remembered from years before. Curiosity got the better of me and I pulled the stick... dry as a bone. It was 2 quarts low in fact. Added the 2 quarts and it went back to what I remembered. Quiet as usual. So, at times the noise does indeed indicate something is wrong.

Thanks

To be clear, noise like I understand the OP was experiencing is not something to worry with. As you described your step-Dad's Avalon, I agree the noise then was a very big deal. Glad you checked and corrected it!

Of course it does not meet the BITOG narrative to say that about this Shell nectar - I'm not doubting what all OP's say - just in 30 years in my domestic motors I never noticed an M1 difference. I'm thinking some who comment are not genuine users.
PUP is fine oil and I will run the OCI - but I will be going back to regular PP since I don't have to special order at a higher price.
I'm into alternating business (and perhaps chemistry) and will continue to use both lubes/fuel companies ...
Now, I'm betting if I put Delvac or Rotella thick stuff in my GM it might be quieter - but doubt it will do anything my 10w30 synthetic is not doing - so next stop will be Dino HDEO in the 5.3L ...

It must really depend on the engine. We noticed the same thing, my brother bought his 1997 Civic in 2006 with 90,000 miles on it. He used Platinum then Ultra for a long time. With the Pennzoil synthetics, there was valve train noise the entire time. It was the most noticeable standing next to the car with the hood up. I even wondered if the valves needed to be adjusted to quiet them down. Then, a couple of years ago, he wanted to try a different oil, he went with Mobil 1. I didn't think there was going to be much of a difference, but, it is much quieter with Mobil 1.

I used both PP and M1 from time to time in both of our old Accords, a '97 and a '99, both 4 cyl sticks.
I never really noticed any significant difference between the two. I also never found M1 to be an especially noisy oil in any application, nor was PP.
Both cars also saw a couple of runs of GC which did seem quieter, but an A3/B3 0w30 is a much thicker oil at operating temperature than an ILSAC 5w30, at least as measured by HTHS.

I find when it comes to synthetic Mobil 1 is a little more noisy in my engine and QSUD is the quietest of the two but for sure Mobil 1 cleans better and i believe the Mobil 1 is better in the winter but i can be wrong on that one. I did not like Pennzoil platinum but the old Pennzoil Ultra was good stuff. Mobil 1 is very easy to find and it usually don't sit on the store shelves collecting dust and getting old Mobil flies off the shelves.

I always pick the oil that keeps the engine quiet. Ticking and clacking is metal banging metal. There may be a lubricating film and it may work. But I don't like it. I want want quiet and smooth when I can get it. I'll take quiet anytime. And once I find the oil that makes that engine "happy" I'll stick with it. That's whey I have three or four brands/weights in the shed. They all do something for each of the vehicles out in the driveway

And since I always try to get over 200,000 out of an engine (and have gotten a few close to 300,000 before they won't pass SMOG checks), I'll just keep on keepin on

Consider going back to using Pennzoil and aee if the noise disappears. I'm betting it will. You went from using a top shelf oil to an economy oil. I'm surprised you jumped ship so quickly after getting all that free oil from them. I think you missed the point of the promotion.

This.

Me personally,I'd never run a cheap generic no name oil,but that's just me. Top quality name brand oils are so cheap there's no reason not to use one. Go back to using the Pennzoil.

I don't think there's such thing as too clean. A clean engine is a happy engine in my book.
