She said the guy went out to her car, turned the key to the on position, looked at the mileage, looked at the oil change sticker she had in her window and said you need to get your oil changed, come back after you get that done. Never even plugged the scanner into the port.

what would you expect from a parts guy?
I'm sure he was intensively trained.
And, gee, out checking this fine Sunday AM, seems like the "key dance" works on every car I can find!
Among them: Savana, Silverado, S-10, Hyundai, Lincoln, Tacoma... then I quit checking. So which cars does it not work on?
The only car I have that cannot be self diagnosed with an ignition key is my Healey replica, and that has no electronic nannies at all.
We own a fancy Actron scanner but it hardly ever comes out of the box, seems my vehicles can all diagnose themselves.
I'm sure he was intensively trained.

Among them: Savana, Silverado, S-10, Hyundai, Lincoln, Tacoma... then I quit checking. So which cars does it not work on?

I'm pretty sure that he told me that CA autozone is not allowed to pull any codes. Something about emissions, and only a licensed mechanic being allowed to perform any kind of "work" on the vehicle.
You can buy a decent obd2 reader for 75 bucks on ebay, or even get one that plugs into a laptop. I wouldn't even mess with taking it to some high school dropout anyways.
